UMW Field Hockey Tops York, 5-3, in CAC First Round

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Junior forward Jena Elliott scored a pair of goals, including the game winner, as the University of Mary Washington field hockey team defeated York College of PA, 5-3, on Sunday in Capital Athletic Conference tournament action at the Battleground. Freshman Sarah Pierson also added a pair of goals for the Eagles, who improve to 9-10 on the season.
York scored first in the back-and-forth affair, as Rachel Hilt scored just under six minutes into play. UMW scored the next two goals, by Meredith Marconi and Pierson, to take a 2-1 lead. But York's Sarah Zimmerman knotted the score with 4:28 remaining in the half. The Eagles grabbed a one goal halftime lead, as Elliott scored on an assist from Kiri Jimerson with 3:36 before the half.
York's Hilt scored again with 28:48 remaining in the second half, but Elliott provided what would be the game winner five minutes later. Pierson added an insurance goal with 10:17 left.
UMW outshot York, 27-18, and had 12 penalty corners to nine for the Spartans. Katherine Brown had 13 saves in goal for Mary Washington, while Meg Eckenrode had 19 saves for the Spartans.
The Eagles will visit top-ranked Salisbury University on Wednesday in the CAC semifinals. Game time is tenatively set for 3:00 pm.

UMW Women's Soccer Escapes Marymount in OT, 3-2, in CAC Quarterfinals

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team came from behind to defeat Marymount University, 3-2, in overtime, on Sunday at the Battleground in Capital Athletic Conference quarterfinal action. Freshman Kelley Hardgrove netted the game winner for the Eagles on an assist from Jaclyn Gebbia.
The Eagles opened up a 1-0 lead in the eleventh minute, when freshman Hannah Pearson redirected a Katie Patchett corner kick into goal. The Saints evened the score as the first half horn sounded, on a goal by Carrie Schneider, assisted by Alisha Parker.
The Saints grabbed their first lead of the game at 1:54 elapsed into the second half, as Emily Parent scored on assists from Margaret Houser and Blair Parker. The Eagles answered with the tying goal at 59:30, when Amy Kingsbury took a feed from Gebbia and slid the ball into the net from the six yard line. Hardgrove took Gebbia's cross from the right into drilled the ball into goal with 2:33 elapsed in the extra frame.
Mary Washington, the second seed in the tournament, will host York College of PA on Wednesday at 2 pm in the CAC semifinals.

UMW Rowing Wins Three of Four Races at Tapke Chase Regatta
PHILADELPHIA, PA - The University of Mary Washington novice rowing teams competed at the Tapke Chase Regatta on Sunday, with three first place finishes, and one second. The men's novice eight finished first, with a time of 16:53.23. That boat consisted of Julie Milam (cox), Dan Culicover, Nathan Wildt, Matt Herr, Scott Phelps, Sebastian Watt, Baker Prviksma, Matt Greer, and Justin Coppage.
The women's four finished first, at 19:56.98. That boat was manned by Kelsey Evans (cox), Betsy Bouton, Caroline Rezendes, Joyce Metzler, and Whitney Harrod. The men's double, consisting of Justin Coppage and Sebastian Watt, took first, at 19:29.20.
The Eagles will resume competition in the spring semester.

UMW Swimming Sweeps Gallaudet in Dual Meet
WASHINGTON, DC - The University of Mary Washington men's and women's swimming teams swept Gallaudet University on Saturday in Capital Athletic Conference dual meet action. The Eagles improve to 2-0 overall as well as in CAC action on both the men's and women's sides.
The Eagle men won, 133-57, and the women won, 132-57. Individual winners for the men included the 200 medley relay (1:52.32), Brian Craddock in both the 200 freestyle (1:50.02) and the 500 freestyle (5:00.33), Luke Moss in the 1000 free (10:31.01), Eric Brnaba in the 50 free (24.35), Will Brunner in the 200 IM (2:09.36), Dale Parker in the 100 butterfly (54.64), Cameron Rice in the 100 free (52.59), Jay Beck in the 100 backstroke (59.62), Kennard Smith in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.80), and the 200 free relay (1:31.32).
The women also won both relays, and saw individual wins from Mikey Pride in the 100 breast (1:11.95) and the 200 IM (2:23.76), Kathryn Anderson in the 1000 freestyle (11:29.71), Maureen Greenlee in the 200 freestyle (2:03.24), Kristen LaCoe in the 50 free (25.97), Lorena de la Garza in the 100 fly (1:02.20), Abby Koch in the 100 free (58.36), Amy Carlson in the 100 back (1:02.69), and Kelsea Natoli in the 500 free (5:41.12).
The Eagles will stay in CAC action on Friday evening, when they visit Catholic University at 5 pm.

UMW Men's Soccer Tops Marymount, 2-1, in CAC Quarterfinals

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Sophomore midfielder Luke Hostetter headed in a cross from freshman Tommy DiNuzzo with 3:35 elapsed into overtime, giving the University of Mary Washington a 2-1 victory over Marymount University in Capital Athletic Conference quarterfinal action on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles, seeded fourth in the tournament, move on to face top-seeded Salisbury University, whom they fell to in overtime earlier in the season.
Marymount got on the board first on Saturday, as Justin Kessler scored with 30:46 elapsed into play. The Eagles knotted the score in the 70th minute, on a penalty kick by Vincent Kooijman. The Eagles earned the win in the 94th minute, when DiNuzzo's cross from the left was headed in by Hostetter, who scored his first goal of the season.
UMW outshot Marymount, 20-8, and had seven corner kicks to three for the Saints. Elliott Jones allowed one goal in 94 minutes of action in gaining the win. BOXSCORE

UMW Volleyball Tops York, 3-1; Gains #4 Seed for CAC Tourney

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington volleyball team dropped the first game, but roared back to win the next three in a 3-1 win over York College on Saturday at Goolrick Gymnasium. Game scores were 28-30, 30-28, 30-24, 31-29. With the win, the Eagles gain the fourth seed for next week's Capital Athletic Conference tournament, and will host Catholic University on Tuesday night at 7 pm.
On Saturday, the Eagles were led by freshman Kelley Hueber, who leads the CAC in kills. Hueber added to her league leading total with 22 kills and four errors in 45 attempts. Junior Johanna Carpenter recorded 15 kills, and freshman Kat Carter added twelve kills for the Eagles. Freshman Sam Harper had 55 assists and 18 digs, and freshman Katy Foster added 22 digs in the win. UMW trailed, 29-26, in the fourth game, and scored the final five points to take the win for the game and match.

UMW Men's, Women's Basketball Receive Votes in D3Hoops.com Preseason Polls
FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington basketball programs are both recognized in the preseason national polls conducted by D3Hoops.com. The women received 61 votes, while the men received 31 votes. The UMW women open the season at the Swarthmore College Tournament against Trinity College, while the Eagle men open against Southwestern University (who received 93 votes) at the Washington & Lee Invitational.

Maguire Selected to Play in NFHCA National Senior North-South Senior All-Star Game

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - University of Mary Washington senior Brynn Maguire has been selected to play in the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association's 2005 National North-South Senior All-Star Game on November 19 at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA, during NCAA Final Four weekend.
Maguire, a 2004 NFHCA Second Team All-American, has 16 goals and five assists on the season for Mary Washington. Her 22 goals a year ago ranked in the top ten nationally, and she ranks second in school history with 104 career points and 45 goals.
Mary Washington will begin postseason play on Sunday, hosting York College of PA in Capital Athletic Conference first round action, starting at 1 pm.

UMW Men's, Women's Cross Country Teams Win Mason-Dixon Invitational

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington cross country teams both finished in first place at the Mason Dixon Championships on Saturday at John Prat Park in Fredericksburg.
For the women, who took first place with 22 points, Julia Rothlisberger finished first overall, with a time of 22:20. Cristy Falcone finished third, at 22:27, and teammate Joanna Long finished fourth, at 22:37. Ann Tripp was sixth, at 22:49, and Mary Naylor was ninth at 22:57. Kerry Carfagno and Amy Pasler also both finished in the top ten, at ninth and tenth at 23:11 and 23:13. Stephanie Grimes placed 14th overall.



The Eagle men finished first with 23 points. Matt Downs was UMW's top finisher, in third place, at 26:19. Jason Call was fourth, at 26:27, and Justin Kirk took fifth, at 27:00. Luke Wolverton was seventh, at 27:11, and George Winslow was ninth overall, at 27:54. Chris Badolato took tenth, with James Rock finishing twelfth and JT Newcomb placing 13th.
UMW will take next week off before travleing to Rockville, MD for the Capital Athletic Conference Championships on November 5 at 10 am.

07/01/05 KRUSH, MOSHOS, TREPAL NAMED TO UMW ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington Athletic Hall of Fame will induct its tenth class on Friday, October 21, 2005, at 7:00 pm, as part of Homecoming weekend. This year's induction class includes former cross country and track star Lesley Krush Cain, field hockey All-American April Moshos Keating, and soccer standout Tony Trepal.
Lesley Krush Cain ('93) was an All-America distance runner for Mary Washington in the early 1990's, finishing second in the 1500 meters at the 1993 NCAA Championships. Krush, who graduated with four school records, was Mary Washington's 1993 NCAA Woman of the Year nominee, and won numerous meet, conference, and regional individual awards. She graduated cum laude in her Mathematics major, earning Academic All-America honors in 1993 as well.
April Moshos ('94) was one of the best field hockey players in school history, leading the 1993 team to the national championship game and a 22-2 season record. A two-time All-American, Moshos also earned multiple CAC Player of the Year, all-region, and all-conference honors. She has earned great acclaim for the school as a finalist for the 2003 Honda Broderick Award for the top player in the nation, and also recently made the U.S. National Indoor team.
Tony Trepal ('93) finished his brilliant soccer career at Mary Washington as the second leading scorer in program history, with 52 goals and 19 assists. A four-time all-state selection, he was named CAC Player of the Year in both 1991 and 1992, and as VISA Player of the Year in 1992. Trepal, who scored twenty goals in 1991 to tie the school season record, graduated with a business degree in 1993, and went on to receive his CPA in 1995.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington has announced the fee schedule for the Fall semester for the brand-new six-court University Tennis Center. There will be a public open house on Saturday, September 24 from 9 am to 6 pm.

RADLEY AUTO RAFFLE RAISES OVER $107,000 FOR UMW ATHLETICS
FREDERICKSBURG, VA - For the fourth consecutive year, the University of Mary Washington, through the generosity of Mrs. Karen Radley, has raised a large sum of money to complement its athletic budgets through a raffle, with the winner choosing one of five automobiles donated by Mrs. Radley of the Radley Automotive Group.
This year, UMW athletes and coaches raised $107,475 through ticket sales, selling 4,299 tickets. The winner of the raffle was Mark Echelberger of Charlottesville, VA.
All UMW athletes and coaches would again like to thank Mrs. Radley for her gift to the athletic department!
