Some Facts


GM Plant in Silao, Gto., Mexico The mexican automotive industry is the 12th largest in the world with a regular production of 1.2 million vehicles and raising. It is expected that production will reach 2 millions vehicles by the year 2000. It gives work to 445,000 employees, exported US$16,800 millions and imported US$9,400 millions during 1996.

The most important car makers from America, Europe and Asia have assembly operations in the country. They consume about US$20,000 millions per year in original equipment for their vehicles.

As to used vehicles, some figures show that there are 12.5 million active vehicles, most of them between 0 and 12 years old, which represent a big aftermarket business.

There are about 600 companies that provide the necesary products for this industry. The next chart shows their distribution per sector:

Due to the importance of this industry in mexican economics, the government, through its branches, supports its growing by providing privileged geographical sites, qualified workmanship, loans and high quality standards to the companies that open or increase their operations in the country.
