The environment of a workplace is very familiar to the environment of a home. A healthy home environment should include positive, supportive interactions between each member of the family to ensure good relationships in the future. This is necessary for the family to function as it should and the product(s) from that system to be productive, balanced members of society.
In some areas, America is like a dysfunctional family. In our society, some members have an advantage, other members in the role of black sheep or forgotten child. In dysfunctional family systems, some subjects are open for discussion and other subjects forbidden. Dysfunctional families keep secrets and problems are dealt with silence. Anger is the one common feature all members from this system share. Anger with an inability to forgive.
The one overriding subject that continues to separate us as a society is the subject of race and the historical damage it has caused one segment of our “family” system, the black American. Efforts to correct or reverse the historical damage from inter generational discrimination are resisted by other segments of society as negative to their goals and opportunities. In the workplace, these family members, white and black, can continue their family disagreement that creates tension in the work environment and lowers productivity.
All members of the American family need to open a dialogue to come to an understanding of the pain and waste racial discrimination has produced in the lives of black Americans. The seminar content contains historical information pertaining to the history of white / black relations from feudalistic Europe to modern America in the format of a lecture. Seminar objective is that by the end of the program the audience will understand that the idea of race has not served mankind well and actually does nothing to explain the physical differences between members of the human family. White and black Americans have a shared, if not identical, historical past, discrimination. The white American in their European experience, the black in America. It is the hope that this seminar will cause these American family members, white and black, to see one another in a new light and understand that the legacy of race has done more harm to the nation than good.
