I'll add something to this, I'm sure Juliana doesn't mind! (-: If your

Rule of thumb: Always go with the version that has the least cuts. This

version has it the way the director wanted it and part of the image

isn't

cut. The choice is clear no matter what the film.

Speaking of Director's Cuts. PJ's "The Frigteners" is getting a special

laser videodisc edition with 12 more minutes of footage and a 4 hour

documentary on the making of the film. No plans yet to release that

version on DVD but something tells me that's just a question of time.

Right now, a lot of DVDs are "pan & scan" but that should change in the

next few years. Sort of a way to make you buy the film again when a

better version is out.

I've been collection videos long enough to say that films eventually

get

re-released on cheaper editions with more stuff! (Just look at the

current wave of "widescreen editions" with additional material on VHS!)

The problem is that a 2 hour movie + a 4 hour documentary won't fit on

a single dvd. And afaik double-sided dual-layer discs (which should

hold ~8 hours) still don't exist.

Actually more than 90% of all region 1 dvd's currently available are

widescreen or they have a widescreen cut on one side and p&s on the

other.

Hello fellow Creatures, I am telling all of my friends about this

mailing list I started at Onelist. It isn't HC/Kate/Mel related (sorry)

but it's for people who love books. I mean looooove reading. People who

go crazy if they don't have a book in their hand every free

minute of their time. It's for all ages and basically what I'm thinking

is people can like email about their favorite authors, books

and give little book reviews and all of the books they've read. I

think it would be fun. It can be about any sort of book too, though, of

I saw HC after I saw a commercial of it on TV, and I remembered that

someone (later I found out it was Marloes!) told me that if I find a way

to see it I must- so I wanted to see it. More than that- the story

sounded interesting and it was on TV here after Titanic so I was curious

After moping around in the library looking for something I couldn't

find, I decided to check out some travel-guides to read some stuff on

Christchurch. I even found one that mentioned our beloved film!!! (-:

Nothing we did not know yet, but I translated it anyway...:

*****

A lot of, sometimes macabre, stories are going around in Christchurch.

For example: During the fifties a scandal, later to be known as The

Parker-Hulmemurder, caused a lot of commotion in the city. Two teenage

girls of the upper-crust [????] murdered one of their mothers. De case

made the city shake on its respectable foundations [I know this sounds

stupid, I translated a typical Dutch saying literally] and for a

genaration people only talked about it in a faint voice with disgust.

The story is made into a play and an (awarded) film: HEAVENLY CREATURES.

You could pay a visit to the neighbourhood where the drama took place,

the Victoria Park in the prosperous suburb Cashmere, on the slopes of

the Port Hills. So far no one has had the idea to place signposts to

lead you to the right spot. You'll have to ask an inhabitant of

Christchurch to get there. But be prepared that there will be an awkward

silence after your question.

(from Insight Guides, Nieuw Zeeland)

****

That was all...no other guide (I saw 8) mentioned anything about it...

Ohh...and I also looked in the Historical Archives, they go back to

1946, but I couldn't find anything at all... )-:

And then someone comes in the library and finds you there copying that:

"Hey Marloes, travel guides? Planning a trip to New Zealand? Cool!

What's that... teenage girls murdered a mother? 'Visit the neighbourhood

where the drama took place'? What is THAT?????" LOL!

And about libraries, I was searching the Christchurch Public Library

site (http://www.ccc.govt.nz/Library/) and they even have a separate

page with articles about the Parker-Hulme case. Too bad that almost all

the links are broken... I also searched their catalog through Telnet and

found some interesting stuff and even got all the call numbers for the

files. There's just that detail of course, that I don't live there :(

I just had the pleasure of viewing this 1995 French film with not a few

similarities to HC. It's about a bond between two misfits...closeness

driving

them over the edge...their reaction to the threat of separation. In

this movie

the pair are grown-up women: an anti-social maid (Sandrine Bonnaire)

and a

chatterbox postal clerk (Isabelle Huppert), living in Northern France. I

suppose the similarities end there, as these characters have big-time

terror

in their histories, peculiarities in their characters, and no real joy

in

life.

To sum it up: 'La Ceremonie', a terrific film with two fab lead

actresses.

My first reaction was to go look and enter myself. True, I've been

there

but I didn't get to see as much of NZ as I would've liked. I decided

then

to be on-set as much as I could. I knew the city would be there if and

when I got back but the shoot was a once in a lifetime experience.

Now, I don't want to rain on anyone's parade but here's one of the

terms

of the contest (I guess the writer in me has learned to read fine print

first):

"5.This month's prize is open for entry world-wide, but we ask that you

only enter if you have the intention of being in New Zealand between

now

and February 28th 1999."

The contest is not a TRIP TO Christchurch. It's for a STAY IN Chch. It

only covers accomodations for 2 days. YOU have to get there at your

expense.

I wonder if The Chateau on the Park is the same as "The Chateau Blanc"

where I stayed. If so, it's a nice hotel!

About that other tourist book that sez you'll get greeted with stone

silence if you mention "Parker-Hulme", it's true! Mention that and

you'll

be greeted with hisses. Imagine talking excitedly about Schoolyard

shootings in the small communities where it happened. The wounds go

deep.

The teahouse in Victoria park was torn down prior to the film's

release.

One would assume they didn't want a recognizeable marker for tourists.

Could you tell us more about that? How long have you been on the set?

And did you see other scenes being shoot but the ones you were in? If

so, what scenes? And how long did it take to get them right??? Whew! I

think that's enough for now... (-:

I can imagine that. Uhoh...more questions pop up: So what happened

during the shoot? I'm sure that a few people were against it because it

was too painful for them. When a tragedy occurs in a community like

Christchurch, all of a sudden everyone is connected to it somehow. They

KNEW The Parkers and the Hulmes because they were friends of relatives

of neighbours of...blahblah. You know what I mean? Were there actually

people against the making of the film? Did the papers write about it?

I related this once.

When I was down there I went to Ilam bookstore at Canterbury University

and bought a copy of the play "Daughters of Heaven". When I asked if

they

had any other books on the topic (other that "P-H; A Lesbian View"

which

I had already purchased, the sweet little lady behind the counter

turned

sour and spat: "That's the only book we have on THAT subject."

Hey, does anyone here either live in Tennessee or have a map of

Aiee! This would be too long an answer. Besides, I answered this a long

while back so it's out there somewhere in the digests.

To be fair, I want to put up my webpage with my diary of the shoot

which

would cover that (and save me the trouble of answering the same

questions

over and over). But I am falling way behind on other pressing deadlines

which , unfortunately I can no longer dilly-dally on.

I hope you guys understand.

We were told to be discreet. When I bought P&H:ALV at a bookstore the

clerk said: "They're making a movie about that case" My reply was "Is

that so?"

The idea was to let the film make a case for itself but not open the

shoot to disruptions based on assumptions that we'd be sensationalizing

the events.

I may sound cold here but...yes..shame on you.

I sat completely helpless one grim afternoon when a professor at

Concordia University (where my then-girlfriend was working) went on a

shooting spree not knowing what her fate was.(She was unhurt but the

witnesses came to her department to hide so it was too close for

comfort)

I could understand a film telling the story but I'd have a real problem

with guided tours of "The spot where it happened".

Somewhere in the digests?? Pffff...could you be a bit more specific?

*lafs* Well, I'll try to find it but I guess it wil take a while...*s*

> I may sound cold here but...yes..shame on you.

I know, I was just kidding there. Can't help myself sometimes. I was

pretty surprised to find a page on the case in a travel guide myself. I

don't think the guide has been made my New Zealanders. They probably

wouldn't mention it at all.

I don't like guided tours in general. Whether they're through

reservations, through residential areas to look at the houses from

famous people, or through slums in 3rd world countries. They always

intrude in other people's lifes (or animals). People are always looking

for sensation...

Am I the only one receiving old contribution to this list?

Yesterday I got this one:

***

In a message dated 9/9/98 9:50:19 AM Central Daylight Time,

adit@main.aquanet.co.il writes:

<< The director of "Titanic", James Cameron doesn't want to take any

risks.

That's why he asked the cast of his Oscar loaded film to play in his

new

movie. Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet will have the main roles in a

new version for the classic "The Star Of Monkeys" (I'm not sure this is

its name in English). Its still unknown whether Winslet and Dicaprio

will play people or monkeys...

>>

Well, there has been a rumor that Cameron was going to remake Planet of

the

Apes with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Charlton Heston role, and maybe

that's

where the 'Star of Monkeys' is coming from. And Kate has said in public

interviews that the only way she would work for Cameron again is if she

got A

LOT of money.

I'm no expert on this, but why is this letter addressed to miramax? I

mean they only have the rights for US distribution and nothing else.

What i'm trying to say is that the message could just as well have

been addressed to any other distributor hoping they will release the

NZ cut, right?

Wasn't there a rumour a while ago that criterion was going to release

the SE on laserdisc with commentary etc?

In fact i hate to see miramax release HC on dvd, as i'm sure they will

fuck it up big time like all other disney dvd's: no extra's and not

16:9 enhanced.

Pretty strange...hmmm?

First, I uploaded some more entries to the database today. Check them

out and don't forget to contribute with your own! Address below, of

course.

Second, I searched again the records at Canterbury Public Library and

found a new book:

McDonnell, Brian. Fresh Approaches to Film, Auckland, NZ, Addison Wesley

Longman New Zealand, 1998. (call #791.437)

As I found it under the search for the words "Heavenly Creatures", this

book may have something interesting about the movie. Couldn't find it at

Amazon or any other big online bookshop. Anyone knows anything about it?

BTW, thanks for the new URL, Marloes! The one I was talking about really

had nothing. This new one has some great stuff - the .pdf file is huge

but it's worth the download!

No problem, that's what this list is for, isn't it? Can you tell me if

the .pdf-file is different from the html-file?

I watched S&S yesterday...wonderful! I'm slowly getting by on my

Kate-films!

Take care,

PDF files, to be opened with Adobe Acrobat Reader, are exact

reproductoins of the file's real pages. It's just like if you

photocopied the articles in the library and put them in your computer.

The file's really huge, almost 9 MB, but it's very nice to have the

chance to see the newspapers the way they look like.

It also, IMHO, shows how much the Parker-Hulme case was important to the

local media (and for the local society too). When you read the

transcribed text on a html or txt file you don't realize how much space

it took on the newspaper pages. It was a lot, really.

Hey guys!

Okay, so I just got back from seeing 'Ever After...' Melanie was

*fantastic*. She seriously outshone everyone else. Her accent was so

cute,

too! I'll definitely be buying this when it comes out, just for Melanie

alone.

That's all!

Kate movies I believe..

BTW: for those who are interested; there's a pretty good pic of Melanie

from

"Ever after" in this USA mag. called "Celebrity style" ,or something

like

that.[Maybe this is old "news" but I just found out..]

That is soo weird.

Well, you've saved the best for last! btw, if you try to locate Jude I

think it's best if you look at the import-film. The Dutch version is

probably not out yet and subtitles are irritating anyways...

Hi there creatures!

That is not weird Charles! I have all the Kate's movies and the great

part of it is that I saw all of them with my wife and she actually liked

them even though she thinks that I'm in love with Kate and not with her.

:) The only movie I saw alone was A Kid in Kings...

Thanks for reading
