Reversible clothing is not just for children or outdoor wear and it is a great wardrobe extender. Any garment can be made reversible. Jackets, skirts and blouses are especially nice for this treatment. Donna Sayler has a kit for a reversible fake fur parka. Making reversible clothing is easier than you may think. Special patterns are not needed almost any pattern can be adapted to make reversible clothing. This kind of garment can be sewn on a conventional sewing machine or on the serger. Facings and hand hemming are eliminated. Below are a few tips for creating your own reversible garments:
Be sure your two fabrics are compatible and colorfast and the same type of is suitable for both.
If interfacing is used test it on both fabrics to see if it will change the hand of either fabric.
Preshink all fabrics used including any bindings.
Measure and decide bottom and sleeve hem lengths before cutting.
Make all alterations to your pattern.
Use a thread that will blend with both fabric colors.
Don't use very heavy fabrics because this will make the garment too heavy to wear and it will not hang correctly.
If possible use an even feed foot (walking foot).
Be sure you use a needle large enough to penetrate both layers of fabric.
If you decide to quilt your reversible garment use safety pins to hold the layers together and prevent the batting from shifting.
