SuPeRsTiTiOnS

So, are you superstitious?? I know that my parents are definitely superstitious and they know ALOT of chinese beliefs. Well, at least that's what they tell me...but are they true? See if you can recognize any of them.

Pears

Have your ever heard that pears could cause bad luck? Well, when we say "pears" in Mandrin, (i can't really tell you how to pronounce it)it sounds like "seperation." So, if you eat a pear and split it with someone else, then you and that person will seperate from each other. Get it? I'm not saying that these superstions are true, just fascinating to hear.

Leftover Rice

I recently heard this from my sister...I was eating this bowlful of rice (very yummy!) and when I finished, I still had some leftover and my sister looked into my bowl and she goes "Angela, you're gonna eat up marrying somebody with freckles!" I was like "Whatever! I don't think so hun!" Then she explained to me that the leftover rice has the impression of someone with freckles...Get it??

White

Have you ever wore a white ribbon of some sort on the top of your head? Well, in our culture (back in the ancient days), people wore white robes from head to toe when someone passes away. According to my dad, he told me to never wear white in my hair because it represents death...

Arm Bands

Here's another one that represents death in the family...Arm Bands. I don't know if the people in china still does this but whenever someone passes away, they would also wear either white or some kind of arm band around their arm. Well, I don't know about you but I never wore anything on my arm before!

Black on Birthdays

Did you know that it's bad luck to wear black on your birthday? I guess I can understand wear it comes from because black is like a another death color in our culture..same as white.

Well, that's it for now! Don't worry, I will add more sooner or later! By the way, if you know any superstitions that are rare, email me at angelachan85@yahoo.com
