70's girdle

The 1970's

The early 70's saw a move away from bright floral patterns although a few 60's influenced patterns such as paisley persisted until as late as 1973. Solid colours became fashionable particularly purple, brown, orange and yellow. Later on the colours tended towards lighter pastel shades such as skin-tone, beige and pale blues.

None of the foundation wear illustrated has suspenders which had been part of most foundation garments since the beginning of the century as tights (US.pantyhose) was the hosiery worn by most women.

By the end of the decade the development of manufacturing techniques to heat-mould fabrics led to the seamless cup. This with allowed new even lighter weight designs which did without the panels such as the Playtex Glossies range, Silhouette's Barely-There and Berlei's Smoothline.

The move away from traditional foundation garment which had started in the 60's continued being replaced by elasticated figure-forming briefs.
