Buying furs can be very expensive. Here are some tips on how to find a fur coat at reasonable prices.
Buy a fake fur
Fake furs can be a reasonbly inexpensive alternative to the real thing. Your not going to find many stores at your local shopping mall that sell any type of men's furs . I would suggest going to the nearest large city to investigate resale shops. Most major cities have a section of town dedicated to the younger crowd looking for fashionable retro clothes. These kind of stores may have plush pile coats, or sometimes mod/disco fake furs from the 60's and 70's. You can expect to find a coat for anywhere between $25 to $100 (US). I bought a black plush pile coat for $85 at one of these stores.
Timing and patience is important. The best time to look for coats is between November and January. Before November there many not be enough stock worth looking at and after January stores will be stocking up on spring clothes.
Maybe a rabbit coat?
Some of the men's stores in large cities that cater to the urban male are also a likely source of fur coats. These stores will be more expensive than a resale shop, but would more likely have real fur coats/jackets such as rabbit, possum, mouton, or some nice fakes. The coats at these stores will be more fashionable that can be found at a resale shop. At these stores you can expect to spend anywhere from $100 to $300 (US) for a coat.
Fur Resale
A fur resale shop is an ideal place to look at and try on fur coats. This is especially true if you are not yet sure of what type of coat that you want. Many people in the late 80's to mid 90's got rid of their fur coats when they became less fashionable. Resale shops may have fur coats for men that include mink, coyote, and racoon. Prices for these coats will range $400 to over $1000 (US).
Does the choices sound above sound like too much work or too expensive? Well then on-line shopping may be your answer...
