Greenwood, Maine History
Greenwood, Maine was settled in 1802 by William Yates.
In 1805 there were thirteen families.
It became incorporated Feb 2, 1816. At the time the notable citizens
were Thomas Crocker, Seth Hilborn, Samuel B. Locke, and Samuel Houghton.
By 1870 the population of Greenwood was 845. In 1880 it was 838.
Greenwood is a farming and manufacturing town with Locke Mills as a business
center. Both Locke Mills and Greenwood have local post offices. There are
eleven ponds within the township: North, South, Bryant's, Twitchell, Indian,
Sheepskin, Overset, Hick's, Meed, and Furlong. Some of the highest mountains
in Greenwood are Mount Abram, Long, Overset, Lawrence, and Patch Mountains,
and Rock Dundee.

L.L. Bean, the founder of the famous outdoor and sports store and catalog, was born in Greenwood.
