The Naming of Newfs

My first (and only, so far!) Newf is named Lewis after Meriwether Lewis, of course!  His full name is:  Amity's Corps of Discovery.  The Corps of Discovery is what Lewis and Clark called their "team".  As everyone knows, Lewis had a Newfoundland on the expedition.

We live near Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home, in Charlottesville, Virginia.  Meriwether Lewis grew up a few minutes from my home, and since he was a friend and colleague of Thomas Jefferson, probably traversed the woods behind my house.  My father is a historian and professor of history in the Midwest, but I have always admired Thomas Jefferson.  I am a graduate student in biology at the University of Virgina (the school he founded), and I study ecology and genetics.  Therefore, Lewis is my hero...being such a incredible naturalist.  My Lewis is wonderful too, and he'll be 1 year old in three days!

Gale's name came from an old legend I had been reading at the time we werewaiting to bring her home. The story was about a woman who was imprisonedby her wicked father on an island tower to keep her from her one true love. Her love would swim gallantly in the sea every eve to be near her at the bottomof the tower prison. One evening he  was delaying and she feared for him in the stormy seas. She leaped out of the tower and into the sea where she turned into a mermaid and went and saved her love but sadly  returned to the sea to live her life there. I thought that her name, Galeanda, was fitting for a rescue dog. And quite romantic, too!Our first newf's name wasn't so dramatic. On the way home with our newpuppy we were looking at her pedigree and noticed lots of  nautical terms used. Ilooked up in the car and we were following an RV, yup, a Southwind motorhome.Since she came from the south ( southern California) we thought it was perfect. She became  Seaworthy's Southwind....Windy to her friends.

My 3 month old puppy Brenin's "official" name is Watchbear's Brenin of
Avalon.  Watchbear is the kennel name; Brenin means "King" in Irish and to
me sounds like a friendly,"bearish" name; and Avalon is a mythical Celtic
island.

I had quite a long "short list" of names--including Celtic and American
Indian names which are part of my ancestry. It took a week after he arrived
to decide--each day the list got shorter.  One important consideration was
a name that would be unmistakable and easy to pronounce.  So, now I hear
him called Brandon, Bremin, Brendon and Breton by neighbors and friends!
Judy Van Dyke

We named Sarah Sarah-ndipity, because we had just about given up on ever
getting a newf, when she came along.

Sam came with his name.  On his paperwork, from his first owner on, his
name has been just Sam.  Not short for anything.  It seems to be a pretty common name, and I would have changed it, but I felt he'd been through enough already.

I hope to one day have a female newf who really loves the water, because I
think Grania Ni Miahle (call name 'Grania') would be the perfect name for
her.  Grania, (in England, Grace O'Malley,) was an Irish Pirate, and they used to
call her the 'She-King' of Ireland.  She lived (some say she was only a legend,) during the time of Queen Victoria.

Our 1st Newfie was given to us and already had a name. Casey.  And that name fit him wonderfully. Our next Newfie, is Harris, short for Harris Burg. We got him in Elizabethtown, PA, but couldn't name him Elizabeth! <vbg> Our next Newfie, is Playgaurds Maxine Noonan. Playgaurds is the kennel, Maxine is because her fathers name was Maxim and Noonan is my great, great, great, great, great grandmothers maiden name and I thought it was unique.Newfies fit well with unique names because, all Newfies ARE unique. IMOAnd our latest is Springborns  Owen Curtis. He came with his name already, we think it's wonderful, so why change it!Kelly LoganPS.Although, I always thought that I'd like to get a boy and a girl  Newfie and name them, Misdemeanor & Felony!
Hodur, my first newf's sire was named Odin, dam Tahoe's Tundra.  One of Odin's offspring had already nabbed the name Thor, so I researched the sons of Odin and came up with Hodur, his blind son, aka god of the night. Thus Tahoe's Hodur of Asgaard.

Blossom came to me with her name, Tabu's Pooh Berry Blossom as did Solo (Tabu's Solo Voyager), but I got to name Moe (Tabu's Seabrook Mozart).  Mozart is one of my favorite composers; I find his music so like our wonderful breed (happy and fun loving).  Before I became so thoroughly obsessed with all
aspects of Newfdom I used to attempt riding dressage.  If you've ever witnessed a musical freestyle, you understand what a breath taking experience it can be.  Anyway, I've kind of combined my love of dogs, dressage/horses and music into Capriccio Farm.

Most of the dogs have musical names: Capriccio's Adagio, Capriccio's Allegro and Capriccio's Calypso who was "Andante" before he went to his family.  Justin, my
singleton puppy, is Capriccio's Just In Time named for the Cole Porter tune and the fact that the vet did the c-section just in time to get him out and revive him.  Didi's litter all had flower names (before going to their homes) after their dam Blossom.  Didi is Capriccio's D'bl D'lyt of Tabu. Double Delight is a beautiful bi-colored rose and one of my favorites.
Well, that's the story of the Caprricio gang.

Our Lance's "formal" name is Sir Lancelot Cost-a-lot.  He was my weddingpresent from my husband.  His mom tried to tell him to get me a pearl necklace;  however, he knows me better than she does.  In the long run a pearl necklace would be cheaper, hence the name.
I have posted very little on Newf-L, but the current thread on Newfie namesbrings many memories. After judging many Newfoundlands in the 1970s,including the National in 1976, I found myself with a strong desire for aNewfie. We looked and looked and finally purchased a Newfie bitch in 1980from the Tureks (Tamiroka Kennels) in Connecticut, where we lived at thetime. We named her Tamiroka Forever Kizzazz, a take-off of the name of aSt. Bernard bitch we had recently lost, Ch. Forever Pizzazz and the nameKizzy. Kizzy was the Newfie love-of-my-life and is almost always in mythoughts. Kizzy crossed the Rainbow Bridge at a young age, due to a canineform of Lupus. She had that very special loving expression, personality andunforgettable attitude and temperament. To this day, I have a very hardtime looking at or judging Newfie bitches that give me the expression thatreminds me of Kizzy. After owning several male Newfs, all of whom have crossed the RainbowBridge, we finally purchased another bitch this past May. It was veryemotionally difficult to name her Kizzy, for obvious reasons; but I wantedher to be the next Newfie love-of-my-life. We honored our old Kizzy bynaming the new puppy, Kizzme, because the expression that they both havesimply says, in their eyes, "kiss me", thus the combination, Kizzme.  We've got "Maryjane" (Cru's Reefer Madness) and her brother "Bogart"(Cru's One Toke Over The Line). And their mother, CH Cru's Midnight Toker(call name Lore, because we're Star Trek fans and she was Chuckie (CH Cru'sGangster of Love)'s "evil twin").We picked Josephine's name out of Pat's mother's high school yearbook, before we even knew we were getting a newf (we thought we might get aBernese). She wound up registered as Shipwheel's Josephine Whales (our"outlaw josey whales," get it?). Our *2nd* Shipwheel puppy was registeredas Shipwheel's *Two* If By Sea." Scooter came to us with his call name andwe decided to register him as Cachalot's (kennel name) "Premier Cru" 'causeit sounded French and is the winery term for "first growth." We werestumped when we got Lucy, so by default we called her Sunrise (kennel name)*Deuxieme* Cru, the winery term for "second growth." Then we realized we'dused "Cru" in both names, and voila, there was our kennel name!
Judi, Pat & the Cru
I am in the same boat as Chip & Rocko.  I wanted the newf,  but my Italian(actually Sicilian) partner named her --- Isabela.Brenda and Isabela
Massachusetts
My mother, Kathy Stavish, started the Dreamboat kennel name after her firstbitch, Annie (Ch. Spillways Dreamboat Annie). Annie is going to be 9 this month!!!  This came from a song by the group Heart, Dreamboat Annie.

After Annie had her first litter, I was able to keep the pick bitch.  Her registered name is also from the song Dreamboat Annie,  Can. Ch. Dreamboats Lil Ship of Dreams, OFA.  Her call name is Chloe.  I am trying to think how she came by her call name.  I believe my little sister gave some of the puppies names.  There were 6 puppies in the litter.  They were Chloe, Serena, Galliano (Gadge for short), Angelina Philomena,  and Raul.   I can't remember the 6th name, can you Mom?????  Take a guess which ones my little sister named!!!!!I have a Chloe daughter that I kept from her last litter.  Registered name is Dreamboats Head'n Out to Sea, OFA. Since I love the movie the Thornbirds,  I call her Maggie.  A year ago, I imported a male from Birgitte Gothen in Denmark.  His registered name was already chosen by Birgitte, Ursulas I Am Wagging.  The minute I got him out of the crate at the airport, I knew why he was called that.  His whole butt moves when he wags his tail.  Anyways, his call name is also from the Thornbirds, and it is Luke.   Who knows what the next newfs name will be............LeeAnn HughesDreamboat Newfoundlands

Of course I remember number 6 LeeAnn ---Vinchenza - Chenzie for short.
Originally I wanted this name for Annie, but I vaguely remember her breeder's   very strange reaction to my suggestion - thus, I played it safe and christened her Annie.   After almost 9 years - Annie was the right choice, the only name for her, and she certainly will always be our Dreamboat Newf.

As for Chloe --- though *she* does not remember --LeeAnn picked her call name, and her bitch.  The little sister, often called the *Non-dog daughter*, of course chose Raul's call name, and would have almost changed her non-dog status if she could have kept him.

Christine, the other *dog-daughter*, gave Galliano his name when Annie whelped this runt of the litter at under a pound, and his most wonderful home for his to short  6 1/2 years in our dog family.  She also has his litter sister Serena, who has taken over where Gadgie left off, assuming the responsibilities of raising Christine's human male - 4 year old Erek.
Kathy Stavish

To my mother Kathy Stavish, and my sister LeeAnn Hughes, they forgot one
thing!  Raul was named Raul because of they way he barked! When he first started barking (this is very true all) his bark sounded like Raullllllll.   His mouth would curl, it was so cute! I might add that my dear boy Gadge, his name came from a brand of wine.  Can anybody guess!

Before I got my first Newfie home, I was really trying to find the perfect name.  All that I could think of were appropriate for males, not females.  A couple of weeks before I got her, I was correcting my students' research projects on famous scientists.  Several were on Jacque Cousteau, and mentioned his ship, Calypso.  One student mentioned that "Calypso" meant sea nymph, and that's when I knew that that was going to be my puppy's name!  I wanted something to
do with either bears or the sea, but until that moment nothing feminine came to mind.

When I was thinking about a name for my Landseer male pup, I was trying to think of a name that had to do with black and white, but nothing masculine came to me.  One morning while showering it came to me that Theodore meant "gift from God", and then I thought about putting Theodore together with "bear" and calling the new pup Teddy as his call name. When I got out of the shower I checked the dictionary and sure enough, Theodore did mean "gift from God", which is what he was after Calypso's untimely death at age two.  However, his name underwent a change from Theodore to Theadorable, and that's his registered name: Padell's Theadorable Bear.

Whitney was named by her breeder, Joan Bendure, so I had nothing to do with naming Benhil's Sweet City Woman, the the name is very appropriate for the sweet old lady.
Ruth L.

Thanatos is the only one of my Newfs that we have named since he is the only Newf we've had since a puppy.  Registered name is Evangelines Thanatos for the kennel he came from.  Some of you have already inquired about his name so you can skip to the next part.  Thanatos is actually the Greek incarnation of death, you know the guy with the sickle.  But this particular Thanatos is from the Piers Anthony book "On a Pale Horse" which is one in his Incarnations of Immortality series.  In the book Thanatos is just a nice guy who is only trying to do his job that people keep misunderstanding.  Seemed fitting for a big huge animal that lots of people are afraid of but wouldn't hurt a flea.  His name has always given people problems.  He gets things like Santos, Sampson, Banatos etc.  Our old vets office staff used to call him Mr. T because he was big and black (for those
of you who remember the A team).  We call him Than for short and in his
extended adolescence called him things I wouldn't repeat.

Our second Newf was already named Angel but we lengthened it to Angelina, a character from the  Harry Harrison Stainless Steel Rat series. She was never out of sight so it didn't really matter what you called her.

Our current female is Haley who was also already named.  She's a big girl at 142 pounds and  we have a habit of calling her the Halenator since she just seems to need a bigger name.

Propects for our third Newf are either Cory or Sophie who are already named.  I think Sophie is a wonderful Newf name, sounds sort of big and huggable.  The next chance I may get to name a Newf will  be the possible puppy coming maybe next year.  That will be either Fantasy's Killashandra or Fantasy's Jubal, maybe Nathan, depends on which type Vickie has for us. Both are again character names.  Killashandra from Ann McCaffrey's Crystal Singer, Jubal from Heinleins Stranger in a Strange Land and Nathan from Chalker's Well of Souls books.
Susan K. Gordon

As to my names, well those of you who know me know that I'm somewhat of a
nut. I have a rather warped sense of humor (you need that in a doggie household) and I just basically try to enjoy each day to its fullest. Needless to say I have had fun coming up with the names for my guys over the years.

My first Newf is named Bear (soooo original). Her registered name is Liberty's Ebony Ursa (Black Bear). Then along came Newfhaven's Beaupere (french for beautiful father) who I did not name. He was called Beau for short.

When I bred Bear and Beau to produce my first litter I needed a kennel name so I chose Fantasy Newfoundlands and I use characters from movies or fairy tales as names for the Newfs that have been born here. When each litter is born I choose a theme (such as The Little Mermaid) to come up with call names for each of the puppies.

So for the dogs currently residing with us, in order of birth, we have Fantasy's Sir Simon named after the Ghost of Canterbury who's call name is Alvin (like the chipmunk!). Then we have Fantasy's Princess Ariel (call name Ariel) and Fantasy's Princess Attina (call name Tina) who are littermates. Next came Sugarland's Autumn Dancer (call name Dancer) and she really does dance.
When Dancer's litter arrived just a few days after Christmas last year it seemed only fitting that since Mom was Dancer we continue on with the reindeer names so we now have Fantasy's Xmas Rudolph (call name Rudy or The Rude Man) and Fantasy's Xmas Vixen (call name Vixen) and she is one :-) I intend to repeat the breeding with Dancer and will continue on with the reindeer theme for names.
That's my guys.

Montauk's Heart's Delight(Bear-after Alabama football coach Bear Bryant) Heart's Delight is(or was)the name of a town in Newfoundland that I found in the encyclopedia. Bear is 11 going on 12 in December. Gabbi came to us with her name and it fit her perfectly. She was the talker. I'm sure she is keeping all the dogs entertained at the Bridge. She and my husband could really carry on a conversation. She used her paws quite effectively also.

Ebunyzer's Tug of the Tide(Tug) Here come the Alabama thing again-the
Crimson Tide. Plus we do love the beach. Read a book called Lucky Tide about a Newf and liked that name. My condo at the Beach is named after Tug. They all communicate very well with their voices-either by outright barking or other sounds. I always know what they want.

When I began searching for a Newf, I thought about all sorts of names.  I
wanted her to have something distinctly Newfoundland.  However, never
having visited Newfoundland and having a basic ignorance of their culture or
various ethnic groups ( I have named all of my children Norwegian names
after my heritage-except for the boy who my husband did not want named
Gunnar)

I decided on the only place that I knew was "around" Newfoundland -
Prince Edward Island.  Now remember I said "around" in quotes because my
basic geographic skills are not Rand McNally status either.  And in our
home, the best loved character from that island was Anne of Green Gables.
My daughters watched every Sullivan show created with that wonderful cast.
So I decided from moment I saw her that she was Annie.  I had to be careful
and not call her "Anne" after the character because my youngest daughter is
named "Ane" which is "Ann" in Norwegian, however since we've Americanized
the pronunciation of Ane which is AH-NEE, we still confuse her with Annie
anyway!!
Tonja Clark

I also have a St. Nicholas.  From what I can see, there are only a few dogs named after People.  I have a 97 year old grandfather (who still lives by himself) who name is "Paul Nicholas".  Thus the name!  Pap seems to like the dog being named after him and loves for him to visit.

I was attempting to run the alphabet with pet names.  1st and 2nd
Newfs were Abby and Bruin.  Next pets were 2 cats named Cally and Dreyfuss.
After losing both Newfs, I was determined to have an "E" name.  We were
looking for a female, so had lots of great names.  Best laid plans!

Along came a perfect male for us with an "E" kennel name.  Opened up a whole new world of names!
PamY

Our Arlo's registered name is Far Hills Takodah Star.  Far Hills is the
Kennel, Takodah is the name of a children's camp in the area, and according
to their literature, means "friendly to all" in some Indian dialect.  Perfect for a Newf.  Star is because he has a patch of white on his chest. The call name of Arlo is because I had been around a lot of Newfs before I finally bought one, and they all seemed a bit goofy, yet "cool", too.  It just seemed to fit - I can't explain it any better than that.  My husband says our next dog is going to be called "Hoover" for the way they eat, but I say NOT.  I lean more toward Dylan.....

Abby came to us named, and they make a perfect pair - Arlo and
Abby.
Deb Dean
Arlo & Abby, too

My newf is so wonderful, plays have been written about her.  Her name isSCHWARTZBARHOF'S VIRGINIA "WOOF", lovingly known as SOPHIE.:-0 Ellen Katz
PS  She is nothing like her name-sake
.
I had 12 years to think about a name. Here goes.... Therese's Most Precious
Nana......alias Nana. My 10 year old boy has an Auditory Processing Disorder
and has a hard time with speech and language. Anyway I had gotten a book
about newfs before we got Nana and I read it to 3 of my kids over and over
again.(my oldest is not to keen on animals only because he knows he'd have
to help with the responsibilities that go along with them which he does and
loves both dogs and cat more than he wants to admit, yep he's a teenager
(say some prayers for me) So we came across a section that stated Nana in the
Peter Pan story was not an English Sheep Dog but rather a Newfoundland,
probably a landseer. For some reason it stuck in my son's memory.

After we picked Nan up we still hadn't deceided on a name. We took a walk with her and were discussing names. Ed blurts out "Nana" like in Peter Pan!  It made so much sense and he was so proud of himself for thinking of it! The most
precious part was mine because by the time I got her she was and still is
most precious!
Therese Dominas

Cdn Ch Sparnoir's 'Arry Six Ortona CD TT Call Name 'Arry - He was our first Newf and my husband always said that when we got our first newf he would name him after a guy that he worked with.  This guy used to call my husband for a ride to work and he lived on Ortona Ave. He was originally from Newfoundland and did not pronounce his h's so he would call and say  "this is Arry, Six Ortona."  Hence the name.

Blackventure's Mittens, call name Annie - She came to us at six months of age and we were told that her name was Dreamboat Annie but when we got her papers her name was mittens because she has white on the tips of her feet.

BIS Cdn Ch Ortona's First Bye, call name Junior - Junior was our first Ortona puppy born hence the name First Bye.

Cdn Ch Bonbears Christmas at Ortona, call name Christmas was born on
Christmas Day.

Cdn Ch Ortona's Ace of Spades, call name Ace.  When he was born someone
said he is as black as the Ace of Spades (not a bit of white on him)

Cdn Ch Newfoux Classic Ortona's Pride, call name Pride.  She is our only
Landseer and we thought she looked so beautiful beside all our black guys that she got the name pride.

And last but not least Ortona's J P Barnes call name J P,  J P stands for Juniors Puppy as he is out of the first litter that Junior sired. He is ten months old and we are expecting great things from him.

I wanted something original for my dogs and that is a problem. So, since I have an interest in the War of Northern Agression,  Don't laugh, thats what they call it around here,  and I moved to TN,   I names each of my boys after a civil war
general. My Bubba is catrada's General Buford. I chose him because each side had a General Buford, each of the other males is also named after a General, such as Sheridan, and Longstreet. I just happen to like Cavalry.

I had no trouble getting these names through the AKC. And then I did have a stitch, years ago, I just added my name  to the front. That alone made them unique. My dogs call names are mostly due to their markings. As we kept all 5 out of our own litter. We called them according to their markings so we could tell them apart and the names stuck.

One is PIN because he had a pin stripe on his face, another is Panda, because she looked like a panda, Boo Boo, I don't know, Marie just called her that. She is a runt but the active swimmer in the family.  Jay, had a J shaped mark on his side.  Rebel, is the biggest and most black of them all. He is named after his proper general name.  Bubba is their father and he just always looked like a big furry Bubba. Their Mom is Nanny. Not original but she was our first newf and she is so sweet she can only be one thing, a Nanny or Mom.
Thats about it for our gang
Jim

We have a Thor, who came to us with that name, so when we got a dreamboat puppy from Kathy and Leeanne, we were looking for a Greek goddess to go with this.  Her registered name is Nev'r Ending Story.  After delving in the texts, we found an obscure goddess of nature, Cybele.  If you pronounce this "si" (like in Sit )- bell, it sounds almost like the French for "so pretty", si belle! fitting for a Canadian Newf.
Whatever you call her, she's a sweetie.
Thanks, Dreamboat Kennels
Kathy and Tony B

We named our Newf Codco because we are involved in theatre and Codco was
the name of a Newfoundland comedy theatre troup. while in Ontario we had a few people say "oh yeah the T.V. show, right?" But most people had no idea where the name came from. Then we went to Newfoundland on the infamous Trek and got some very different reactions. Everyone recognised the name and many responded with "bit of a joke is he?" But one really neat moment for us came in Bonavista. We were taking Codco for a swim near the campgrounds when we ran into some guys fishing, we asked them if the dogs would bother them and they said to go ahead, they moved a little up shore and we moved a little down shore. Well in no time at all one of the fishermen came running back down to us saying "did I hear someone call their dog Codco?" Turns out that he had been head camerman for the troup when they were on T.V. He was so excited, said he'd be sure to tell everyone etc. Must admit I had a moment of panic wondering if the name was copyrighted!
Marty, Art
and Codco of course
p.s. Kennel name, Hannibal's Captain Codco

My first Newf was Ursa, and since then I have discovered that nearly
everyone calls one of their Newfs a bear name. When I started to breed Newfs, and later Cairns, I chose names that I could see in print and not flinch. We have followed the alphabet with Newf names, but the name I am most often asked about is Grip's. He is BIS Ch LogyBay's Key Grip. He came from a litter with mostly males and finding suitable K names wasnt easy, and I wasn't having a Ken dog. <vbg> My husband works in the film/television industry and he suggested Key Grip for the male I had chosen to keep. The Key Grip is the person in charge of the stage hands, who are called grips.  The grips are responsible for setting up equipment, props, scenery, laying  the dolly tracks and pushing the camera dolly [called dolly grips]. The grip must have a 'firm grip' on things, thus the name.

Jo [who was ten years old on Friday] was to be LB's Josephine, but was such a crazy puppy who did pirouettes when she was happy, that we decided to call her LB's JoJo Dancer, from the Richard Prior film.

When I imported Homer, [Rocky Harbour Homeward Bound] I chose "Homeward Bound" as his registered name because he was coming home to
Newfoundland from the USA. I thought Homer was a appropriate call name for
a dog who was travelling all this way. When he was a puppy, kids would ask
his name, hear "Homer" and respond with "Homer Simpson?" I didn't know who *he* was until a friend enlightened me. I have never seen the show; I loathe
animated films.

Ruth talked about her "Calypso", and I had one, too. She was Ch.Avalon's
Calypso, and she came from the Netherlands. It was a C litter and I chose her name in honour of the HMS Calypso, launched in 1883 as a training ship for the Royal Newfoundland Naval Reserve. During the first world war, she provided protection for the fishing fleets on the Grand Banks. I have an archival photograph which shows the Calypso, and her naval cadets accompanied by a Newfoundland dog.

I keep hoping Steve will let me change
his name.  I would prefer Pavlov.  The pup has a definate spit problem
Terri Harris
.
I'll bet that if Pavlov had Newfies, he would have drowned.
Mike, Sandi & the gang of fur

Well folks, we have decided on a name for our pup.
And the name is...
Drum roll please...      Cosette.

For those wondering, Cosette is from the book Les Miserables. She is
described by Victor Hugo as incredibly beautiful, yet a little simple. I
think this fits Non-Newf-people's misconceptions of Newfies to a tee. Of
course we look forward to two things. 1) Not many people have read Les
Miserables (1400+ pages of Victor Hugo is not for the faint of heart!) and
2) we are going to have the smartest Newf that ever lived. OK, so maybe the
smartest Newf that ever lived in this house...

At any rate, My wife and I both loved the book, love the musical (seen it
three times), and love the name. We also like a name that isn't heard too
often. This seemed to fit the bill. And besides, with a Newfie nick-named
Cozy, how can you go wrong?

Been pricing fences, been looking at catloges, been Newf-proofing the
house. Can getting ready for a baby be much worse than all of this? I think
we should have a Newfie shower instead of a baby shower!

BTW, this is an exerpt from Les Miserables:
"Cosette's whole person was naivete, innocence, transparency, whiteness,
honesty, radiance... Cosette was a condensation of auroral light in womanly
form."

Hmmm. Sounds like our Cosette hasn't read this yet...
