Neyland Stadium
Shields-Watkins Field

One of my favorite boyhood memories is the sound of the roar rising from Neyland Stadium on a big third down play! Remember when the University would invite 4H Clubs from all over the state to the annual game with Chattanooga?

The armada of orange-clad vehicles on the way to the game. The meeting with old friends. The tailgate. The bus ride. The walk down Peyton Manning Pass and into the stadium. The blue sky and 106,650 fans. The crowd cheering every movement of the band. The run through the big "T". The game. The post game dinner. The visit with parents and family. The ride back home.

A great time is had by all thanks to "football"!

2008 Prediction and Weekly Comments

Preseason:

It is time for the Vols to return to the glory years. The University of Tennessee will run an exciting offense with an impregnable defence and be the National Champions this year!

Tues. Sept 2, 2008 after the UCLA loss:

Once again we start off in the hole! Last year proved we can get to the SEC Championship after losing that first game. But we have got to play a lot better than we did Monday night.

Sun. Sept 14, 2008 after the UAB win:

That was a lot better for sure. Next week will be a real test against Florida.

Sun. Sept 21, 2008 after the Florida beating:

I listened to this game on the radio on the way back from the Mountain View Reunion. It sounded very bad. I asked my wife if the Vols should fire the coach and get somebody in there that could win. She said maybe he just needed better players. Maybe she is right. Mistake after mistake after mistake. Why?

Sun. Sept 28, 2008 after the Auburn game:

I paid off a Buster Burger bet on the last Vol defeat at the hands of Auburn and was really looking forward to collecting this year. But, alas, now I owe a meal at Toots to the catwoman. Come on vols, don't be so boneheaded. You have to play very very well to win these games. That means not hitting players out of bounds and not being sloppy with handoffs!

Sun. Oct. 5, 2008 after the Northern Illinois game:

I listened to bits and peices of this game as I was watching Vanderbilt go 5-0 while beating Auburn 14-13. Northern Illinois may be a good team but they better watch out next week. I think every team that has beaten the Vols has lost the next week. But wait, it was a victory, wasn't it? Maybe we've got the GA Bulldogs set up just where we want them, coming off an embarassment at the hands of Alabama on national TV and a week off to get all over confident about the inept UT team coming into Athens. Heck, maybe the stradegy will work. It did two years ago.

Sun. Oct. 12, 2008 after the defeat in Athens:

I think the Vols played better. This game turned before the end of the first half when we let them out of the hole on third down and then literally gave them a 97 yard touchdown drive. I know people will be saying the Vols should run the ball more. I don't think they can. They are not opening holes or blocking anyone. We've got to do better against Mississippi State.

Sun. Oct. 19, 2008 after beating Mississippi State:

Well, that was more like it. I may ever watch the taped highlights to actually see what happened. Next week, lets lay a licking on Alabama and things will look a whole lot better.

Sun. Oct. 26, 2008 after the Alabama game:

Heck, I thought we should have beaten them! We just made too many bonehead penalties that killed our scoring opportunities.

Sun. Nov. 2, 2008 after the defeat at Columbia, SC:

I am just speechless this morning. What can be so complicated about blocking a few people?

Sun. Nov. 9, 2008 after we couldn't beat Wyoming on Homecoming:

Coach Fulmer will be gone at the end of the season and I am sad about it. I have never seen an offense get worse with each game. I wonder what my Dad would have said about all of this if he had not died six years ago tomorrow. The last words I said to him were, "Miami 10, Tennessee 3".

Sun. Nov. 23, 2008 after the win over Vanderbilt:

Finally, the players woke up and made a few holes in the line. I am glad they won this one for Coach Fulmer. I hope next week, they can send him off with a nice victory over Kentucky in Knoxville.

Sun. Nov. 30, 2008 after the win over Kentucky and Fullmer's final walk off Shields Watkins Field as head coach of Tennessee.:

I certainly wish Coach Fulmer the best in whatever he choses to do. I would not be surprised to see him have another team close to a national championship before the University of Tennessee football team gets there again. We will see.

UT'S COLORS?

Why are UT's colors orange and white? Where did UT get their particular shade of pale orange? The story goes that back in the days when the stadium was open on the end, the hill with Ayers Hall on top was covered with spectacular orange and white Daisies in full view of the fans. They decided to take orange and white for the school colors. The pale center of the Daisy became their orange and the white of the petals became their white.

The Changing of the Stepping Stones

On the left, are the stones as they appeared before the game.

On the right, the stones are in the position honoring the University of Georgia for their defeat of the Vols in 2008.

As everyone knows I am a die-hard Vol fan. I lived in Georgia for the past several years and have one daughter who gradutated from UT and one who graduated from UGA.
I have a stepping stone for each school. I decided to use these stones to honor the winner of the game each year. So after the game, I perform the ritual of changing the stones when the other team wins.

Here are the results of the past nine games. The Bulldogs broke the little jinx the Vos have had for the past two years.

Georgia 26-14 on Oct 11, 2008, in Athens
Tennessee 35 Georgia 14 on Oct 6, 2007, in Knoxville

Conference Comparisons

We, in the South, always assert that the SEC is the strongest conference in the Nation. However, other conferences may have good reasons to claim that they are the best. After the bowl season, I have my own method for determining the strongest conference.

Here are the 2008/2009 bowl games involving SEC teams. I will post the results as the games are played.

According to my analysis, the Big 12 has beaten out the SEC for the number one conference ranking! Using the same point system that has had the SEC on top in past years, the Big 12 nosed them out this year. The Big 12 wins because of their depth having five teams in the top 25 while the SEC had only four. One other interesting note is that the Mountain West has moved up ahead of the Big 10, Big East and ACC which means to me that they should become a BCS conference.
