North Georgia and North Carolina Scenery, 2005

1. We briefly stopped by Tallulah Gorge State Park. We did not actully see the falls here but one could spend a day or more exploring this spot. That is the Tallulah River visible in the gorge below. This is the spot where Karl Wallenda walked a tight rope across the gorge on July 18, 1970.

2. On highway 64 between Highlands and Franklin NC, one passes Bridal Veil Falls. The road used to pass right under the water but now it skirts the falls.

3. Here is a view of the top of the falls. Apparently when there is more water, it flows over the rocks so that it looks like a bridal veil.

4. A short walk down a trail lead to where the Cullasaja River flows over the Dry Falls.

5. I cannot imagine why they call these the Dry Falls because there was certainly a lot of water this day.

6. Here we are under Dry Falls looking down the Cullasaja Gorge.

7. On our way back, we drove into South Carolina and then back into Georgia where we saw the Toccoa Falls. On November 5, 1977, beautiful Toccoa Falls turned deadly. A slow moving rainstorm dropped nine inches of rain when an earthen dam above the falls gave way. A huge torrent of water poured through the dam and over the falls, killing three people in the dorms of the Toccoa Falls College. Thirty-eight persons perished at a trailer park along the stream. The falls are actually on the campus of Toccoa Falls College. You enter throught the gift shop to get the falls.
