Hi we live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Provincial Capital. with our West Highland White Terrier named Sheena (Sheena the Wonder Dog). The pictures in this link were taken from our balcony where we lived in June, 1999. There is also an excellent link there if you are planning on visiting Edmonton. There are three new pictures added June 7, 2000 showing Edmonton's downtown, taken facing North from the other side of the North Saskatchewan river valley. Here is a page of SHEENA pictures for you to enjoy.

The West Highland White Terrier (Westie) has a long background where they were originally used in Scotland as hunting dogs to catch rats, badgers and other small game. In the beginning it was thought that the white dogs were the weaker of the breed and were destroyed. When it was found they were truly a dog with a strong heart and sharp wit the West Highland White Terrier stepped into their own place in history. To this day they like to burrow in the ground and can make short work of a lawn if some time is not taken to train them otherwise. They are a loving animal and are very much akin to people. They are good with children and older people alike and have no trouble leaving their masters to get a pet from everyone that happens by. They are also not short of any self esteem and think they own the world. They are not afraid of man or beast and will boldly charge at the biggest of dogs showing no fear what so ever.
Every day along our walks Sheena draws in people that we have never met before and we have obtained a large collection of friends. Sometimes people will come up and have a long conversation with Sheena, give her lots of pets, leave and to date we have never got their names or know who they are.
Some of the Westies favorite likes (but not in order of preference) are
Dog Biscuits
Long Walks
Long Naps
Playing with (and killing) a stuffed toy
Sleeping in a cool place around the toilet bowl
Squirrels
Belly Rubs
Liver treats or other treats
A (not so squeeky any more) toy named "Charlie"
A ride in the car especially with my head out the window
Some of the Westies dislikes (but not in order of preference) are:
The Vet's Office
Baths
Being moved from the bed.
Being fed breakfast when they "REALLY"want to go outside!
Being rushed when there are more important things to smell.
Flies in the house
Did I say "The VET's Office"
The other thing about Westies is they definitely have a mind of their own and have a very distinct way of letting you know what they want by body movement (or lack of it) and eye contact. I'm sure everyone who has a Westie knows what the "Westie I'm mad at you look" is like? They make excellent guard dogs due to their keen sense of smell and hearing. They are very protective of their "home turf" and will alert the household to any strangers in the immediate vicinity. They have a loud bark and will use it if someone comes to the door who is a stranger.
