Caroline Amelia Mercer entered at Tyburn Convent 31 March 1906. She became a novice at Tyburn on the 9 October 1906, when she received the habit and a new religious name: Sister Mary St Thomas of Canterbury, of Jesus.

She made her first profession at Tyburn 15 October 1907 and her perpetual profession at Ste Marie, Ganshoren, Belgium on the 30 September 1910. She returned to Tyburn and was named Secretary General on the 20 June 1913. She was re-elected to this office twice, at the general chapters of 1914 and 1922.

At the general chapter of 1924 she was elected a General Councillor and re-elected to this office at the general chapters of 1926 and 1933.

She moved from Tyburn to St Benedict's Priory, Royston, Hertfordshire on the 1 August 1928. In October 1933 the mother house was moved from Tyburn to Amiens in France, so Mother St Thomas went there.

The community at Amiens fled to Louvigne in Britanny when the Germans invaded France and so Mother St Thomas was in occupied France until the general chapter of 1945, which she attended. She was not re-elected and returned to St Benedict's Priory, Royston on the 21 November 1945, where she was appointed Dean.

She died on the 22 March 1949 at Royston and was buried there in the priory's own cemetery on the 24 March 1949.

When this priory was transferred to Wadhurst in Sussex in October 1964, the bodies were transferred to a common grave at Cambridge cemetery.

From Mother St Thomas's necrology, the following information was obtained: she was a great niece of the American writer Emerson on her mother's side, and had literary gifts. She translated from the French nearly all the writings of Dom Columba Marmion, Abbot of Ma Maredsous abbey in Belgium, and also his biography by Dom Roymond Thibault.

She gave instructions to women who were preparing to become catholics, and prepared many children for their first communion and confirmation. She had great love for the poor and for the 'down-and-outs.'

A number of her books and a volume of her poems are kept in the convent library at Tyburn. they do not bear her name, but the author is given as 'a nun of Tyburn Convent,' which was the custom then in many religious orders.
