The life and times of Dick Hyatt.

GERMANY-1956

Assigned to the USAREUR Intelligence, Military Police and Special Weapons School, located in Oberammergau, Bavaria. As Mr.Cox the personnel Warrant Officer said to us on arrival "You men do not know how fortunate you all are, to be assigned here. In fact you were all hand picked for this assignment". Yeah Right! I had just been "busted" to E-1 and shipped out of the 11th Airborne Division in Augsburg, for refusing to participate in jump training! When Mr. Cox opened my 201 file he looked up with this big eye, amazed and bewildered look on his face and blurted out,"Hyatt how the hell did you get here"? "Like you said sir! hand picked", was my reply. I didn't make a friend that day.

KOREA-1960

15th Medical Battalion, Camp Hawkins, located at Pobwonee, better known to most as Mickey Mouse Corners. The 1st Cav patch was affectionately called a horse blanket, and was it ever big. The rank insignia(stripes)are almost down to my elbow.

Vietnam

Moonlighting in the Battalion Enlisted Club.
Budweiser was the best selling beer,Coke and Orange the best selling softdrink. We had a Korean beer "Crown" we could leave it stacked out back and a GI wouldn't even steal the stuff! Drinks were delivered by the contractor Philco-Ford, Electrical Power was supplied by the Vinnell Corp. Roads to no-where! were paved by BRM, buildings built and maintained by PA&E. Supplies delivered from Ship to Shore by Alaska Barge and Transport. Every twenty seconds a "Chopper" flew overhead. President Johnson sure knew how to run a war...didn't he, or would that be ...a conflict?

Vietnam

Viet Nam, prior to Tet, had to be about Jan 1968 in 29th Support Gp. 3rd Ord Bn, 576th Ord Co.(Ammunition)Long Binh.

Korea 1969

Ten years later and I'm back but this time closer to the hostilities on the DMZ. My situation is better more rank and a better paycheck each month. Unit: 5th Battalion 38th Field Artillery(Steel behind the rock) Or as we called it "Still behind the rock". 2nd Infantry Division. Pamgogi ROK.

Receiving my retirement certificate from Col George Mosgrove at Fort Eustis Va.,30 April 1975, Its been a long twenty years, a few hard knocks along the way, but! what the hell!, you only live one time. My motto: Life is good! be in it! "Don't just talk about it, Do it and be about it".

The Kingdon of Saudi Arabia
