Benefits

Helping the EnvironmentEbooks not only help the enviorment with the fact that they save paper, e-books offer other benefits as well. Students with disabilities, ESL students and auditory learners are able to use the spoken word function from the ebook readers to have the book read aloud to them, and this will help with reinforcing their own reading of the text.

Updates

E-books are much easier to update. You still have some the of the sames processes that you have with a written book: the writing, producing and distribution, but you do not have the printing cycle and the time for the distribution cycle is greatly decreased. Printed books can be up to a year old by the time they reach the market, whereas an ebook could be distribuited much quicker.

In areas like technology and medicine where new information becomes available frequently, e-books have an advantage. Also, since ebooks can be updated easily any mistakes can be corrected in a timley manner, instead of having to wait until the next edition of the book is published, three to five years down the road.

  • The definition of an electronic book sales used in collecting this data was "All books delivered electronically over the Internet OR to hand-held reading devices."

Disadvantages

  • The potential life of eText is still unknown.
  • Different formatting of eBooks from different publishers.
  • Harder to read than pBooks
  • Specialized software and/or hardware.

Daniel M. St.Andre

"When it comes to the cost of books vs. the cost of e-books. The real question seems to be the value of the content vs. the value of its package. When I buy a paper book, I expect to pay more for embossed leather with gilt edge pages, etc than for a drug store paperback. The music industry has a similar struggle with the price of download songs vs. traditional retail album packages (CD or LP). What is the value of the content? What is reasonable compensation for creation of that content?"
