April 19, 1999 - Tidepool Is This the End of Raw Oysters?

Raw Oysters May Be Taken Off the Plate by FDA Action

The Center for Science in the Public Interest is asking the FDA for stricter controls on the sale of raw oysters and shellfish.  A petition was filed asking FDA to require that shellfish sold for raw consumption be free of Vibrio vulnificus.  This bacteria naturally occurs in all coastal waters of the US, but does not become harmful until the water temperature exceeds 68 degrees F.  The Pacific Coast Growers have asked  that the matter be referred to the Interstate Shellfish Sanitation conference for continued research before new standards are set for "safe" levels of bacteria and a threshold to trigger a harvest shutdown.  For additional information, follow hyperlink to Tidepool.
