The Precious Moments Chapel
The Chapel is located in Carthage, Missouri. The beautiful painted murals at the Chapel total almost 5,000 square feet. The largest mural is on the ceiling, which spans 2,600 square feet. Sam had to lie on his back on a scaffold nearly thirty-five feet in the air, working for hundreds of hours, to complete the painting. All the murals and stained glass on the chapel's east side show the stories of the Bible's Old Testament; the New Testament stories are shown on the west side The walkway lined with Precious Moments angels is called "Avenue of the Angels." One of the most moving experience people have while touring the chapel is visiting the Philip D. Butcher Memorial Room, which Sam designed in honor of the son he lost in an automobile accident on September 6, 1990. Sam spoke of this room saying, "Many tears have been shed in Philip's room at the chapel, including mine." "The Fountain of Angels" displayed near the chapel is over 250 craved bronze figurines with dozens of geysers and water jets that shoot tens of thousands of gallons of water almost 100 feet into the air.
