Hello fellow horse lovers!!!!!!! My name is Christine. I love your sight. I think all these people who neglect and abuse horses should be shot and pissed on. Or at least publiclly flawed to death. I recently saved a horse from abuse and neglect. And I really hate what some people have put these animals through. The horse that I saved is doing well now but it has been a long road to recovery for him. Please keep up the good work. P.S. The people that owned the horse have been charged and fined. But I still think they got off lucky. Thank You!!

I'm currently a student in college so I can't help much finacially. It's hard to believe what people will do to animals. Some day I plan to start my own rescue. In the mean time I will do what I can including spreading the word about horse slaughter and a use, and the Premarin industry, and getting a good education so later I can make a real difference. Everyone, keep up the good work!

anyone and i mean anyone abusing any animal should be slapped away in prison for 30 yrs. min.take care of all your animals and love them or don't have them. give them to someone who will love them. all abuse to domestic animals should be stopped and the g v. should do all it can to help. they have money for everything else. all endangered animals like the tiger should have special funds and attention so they can be taken off the endangered list.animals love us unconditionally so why do people abuse them??? S far as i am concerned, animals are the best thing god ever created....

i just can't believe that anyone can look into a horses eyes and not see the pain and how scared the horses are and then bang them in the head with that thing they use to crush there skull. how can those nasty people live with them selves knowing that the murder hundreds of inicent horse. how can those people go to sleep at night????? they are sick. why should we butcher our horses for other countries so they can be happy while they eat our horses and we americans cry over it. its not fair!!! they want to eat horses let'm eat there own. the only reasonwe do this is for money and it is sick. i am only a 13 year old girl and all of this to stop. this might sound stupid but the president should have a law stating that horse slaughter is illegal in america!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

I am appalled and disgusted at the way some people treat animals that cannot defend themselves. I am fortunate to live in California where transportation of horses for slaughter was banned. Although it doesn't stop the rest of the idiots from the day to day abuse that continues to happen here and all over the world. If only they could see what we all see in those loving, soulful eyes.

It is happening right in front of your eyes!At regular everyday farms everywhere there are horses being abused! It might not be the kind of abuse that we think of automaticaly, it might just be the shoes, or teeth, or legs, or feet but after a while it add up to be a lot!I know a horse that has a screwed up hind leg. It has been that way for a while. I think i am the only one who notices it. I think he once broke his leg and no one payed any attention so it grew like that. There might be slaughter houses a d stuff and of coarse that is bad too but most abuse happens in so not so obvious ways!

I'm glad that there are people like you out there trying to help horses. I wish you could get your message out to the public more. I was not aware of what when on in the production of drugs for estrogen replacement therapy. I have 3 horses. I have had them for 22 years now. They are like part of the family and when I try to explain to non-horse people what they are like I say "they are just like having 3 very large dogs". I have been around the horse industry for a long time and I have seen just about everything. I have always been very saddened by the abuse and cruelty I have seen first hand. I have had nightmares about seeing older horses and ponies housed in dark, out of the way pens at auctions. These horses had been marked for the killers. I watched as the "killers" loaded these poor horses onto trailers. They laughed about how they had ju t fit 12 horses and 4 ponies into an 8 horse trailer. The ponies were just loaded underneath the legs of the horses. When I bought 2 of my horses they had been abused. The one horse was abused so badly that even after loving her for 22 years she still gets terrified when she hears the sound of a hammer hitting a nail or if you move your hands quickly around her head. He ven only knows just what happened to her. I have also witnessed "killers" going to families who are forced to sell their beloved horses. The "killlers" give the nice story about how they are buying the horse for their daughter etc. These families think they are selling their beloved horse to some ne who will love and care for them, when in fact the horse is loaded up and taken directly to the slaughter house. These things have sickened me - I hope that you can get these things to stop! Best of luck to you!

Things you can do to help horses: 1-don't take Premarin-tell others not to and why 2-join animal welfare organizations both local and national 3-be the "eyes and ears" for local animal welfare society 4-keep a instant camera in your car to take photos of horse abuse and contact animal control. 5-join your state's horse council-and let your voice be heard on the horse welfare issues. 6-take riding lessons, learn as much as you can about horse care and be a responsible horse owner.

Thank you for your information on HORSE ABUSE. I am a psychic channeler. Lately I have "received" some insights concerning this problem: Apparently, horses are "complaining" RIDERS ARE TOO HEAVY. Unless it is a large horse (17H or over), anyone over 150 lbs causes BACKSTRAIN, which makes the animals TEMPERMENTAL (APT TO NIP OR SHY) and prone to BALK DURING MOUNTING and ROLL after riding. Actually (according to my Source), horses don't like to be riden AT ALL unless the rider is JOCKEY-SIZED, no more than 120 lbs. They prefer PULLING WITH AT LEAST 2 HORSES per team or (if you can afford them as pets) PLAY, which they feel they DON'T GET ENOUGH OF. If the rider is too heavy and not much can be done about it, rides should be kept as short as possible, perhaps only 1/2 hour. La ge horses can accomodate people over 200 lbs.

Hello to everyone on the board, some of which i have personally responded to. First & foremost, congrats to this web site, which is very organized & makes it simple & easy to send letters to get the laws changed. Hats off to you! Secondly, I operate a private rescue in NJ, which consist of mostly Saddlebreds, but i have others as well. I rescue on a mouth to mouth basis, as i currently dont have the room for many horses, but will have in April of 2000! I think its important to und rstand that the root of the problem are owners whom sell their animals & think they will stay in their new good home for life, or maybe are not concerned if they will be sold or not. If we all make an effort to be careful in our selections, we may not fin that we have to sell, & if you do have to sell, please have the new owner sign a contract that if they are not happy with their purchase that you require the horse is sold back to you. This will ensure that that horse does not end up at a slaughterhouse. After all, remember just how many of these animals reach that destination in the first place! We must start to realize that horses arent objects that you buy & upgrade like an automobile & that we truly hold their lives in our hands. For the horses that a e destined from birth to end up at the slaughterhouses, do write & tell everyone you know what is happening in order to change the laws & stop this horrific, senseless murder.

I really enjoy the information on your site. I am on the board of the Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society, and we too find homes for retired and non-competative Standardbreds. I am curious to know what types of fundraisers you have, if any. We are a you g society and are always appreciative of any suggestions to make things better. Last night we had a raffle at one of our racetracks and I ran into a young girl (17?) who thought we were a big rip off because we didn't give the owners any money for their h rses, just a tax receipt. I was so upset by such ignorant thinking that I refused to get into it with her. I can't believe how some people think! It just makes me more determined to educate, educate, educate!!!! I have been Asked by Susan Wagner of Equine Advoctes, INC. to post this Press Release. karenp. Press Information Date: May 19,1999 Contact: Susan Wagner Equine Advodcates Shuts The "Killers" Out At PA. Auction! Flushing, New York: Equine Advocates, Inc. a national non-profit equine protection organization based in New York, purhcased and rescued 13 horses near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, last week, most of whom would have otherwise gone to slaughter. A total of 23 horses were put on the aucton block at a specially organized sale, mostly to accommodate an Amish farmer who had gone out of business and needed to sell his 10 horses. "We first heard about this auction through a Good Samaritan who lives the the area and was trying to contact different groups to help save these horses," said Equine Advocates' president, Susan Wagner. "As soon as I heard about it, I knew we had to res ond. These circumstances were unusual in that this auction did not offer horses for sale on a regular basis. Because the community where it took place is not an affluent one, we understood that the locals would probably not be bidding on the majority o them. However, we were told that 'killer buyers' (middlemen for the slaughter plants) would be out in force. They were; there were at least four of them there." "Thanks to the generosity of our supporters and several humane organizations, we were able to raisen the necessary funds i three days in order to save those horses who wuld have been the most likely candidates for the Slaughterhouse," Wagner contiued, "I ad also contacted Debbie Polasek at the "Double 'D' Rescue" in Pennsylvania. She met us at the auction and her group rescued another four horses. Our primary goal was to ensure that not a single horse went to the 'killers.' In total, our two groups rescued 17 out of the 23 horses. The other six went to private homes. We won! The 'killers' lost; they were completely shut out. It was Great!" Five of the 13 horses rescued by Equine Advocates were former race horses. One, in particular, was in horrible condition. "At one point during the auction, it was just me bidding aga nst the "killer buyers" for this one crippled and emaciated mare", Wagner continued. "No one else wanted her. She was definitely going for meat, so we had to save her. I am so gad that we did because she is just a sweetheart. I named her 'Paula.' Ha pily, Paula's prognosis for a healthy life is good. Whe will remain in foster care in the area until she strong and healthy enough to be transported to a new home." "It is just so amazing how a horse who had been so badly abused and neglected could still respond so well to people," said Wagner. "This kind, gentle creature wuld have already been on European or Japanese dinner plates had we not rescued her. The Stat of California must be applauded for being the first in the nation to ban the slaughter of horses. Hopefully, the movement to end horse slaughter will start to spread across the country." Every year, it is estimated that 150,000 U.S.-bred horses are slaughtered in plants in the U.S. and Canada and their meat exported overseas for human consumption. According to state and nation-wide polls, most americans are opposed to the pracice of hors slaughter. Americans consider horse to be "favored" animals, like dogs and cats, who deserve a peaceful and dignified death through humane euthanasia, not a terrifiying trip to the slaughterhouse. "Paula would have suffered a horrific death," said Wagner, "particularly since Pennsylvania does not have significant legislation on the books to protect horses in transit. She probably would have been transported to slaughter in an inhumane double-deck r cattle trailer (illegal in many states for the transportaton of horses) and forced to travel anywhere from 24 hours to several days without food, water or rest. I do not believe she would have survived the trip." The 13 horses rescued by Equne Advocates are now living in permanent and foster homes in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York and Kentucky. "There was a tremendus amount of generosity and cooperation by all those who contributed funding and who offered to ad pt or foster care for these horses. Numerous individuals and organizations from six states helped to make this a success," Wagner added. Equine Adovcates, INC. urges everyone to oppose the cruel and inhumane practice of horse slaughter. In 1995 I learned I had Cancer of the Uterous. After surgery, my doctor prescribed Premarin. What did I know? Even as a Horse owner, I had no idea how the drug was made. I am now on Estrace. I think ever woman and girl needs to be made aware of now Prema in is made. I think that an all out advertising campaign should be done in every horse and womans magazine. The general public needs to be made aware of this drug. Keep up the great work.

Wonderful action page. Full of information and action that ordinary people can take. I will have to print off some your ideas and send some letters out. I didn't realize that company made so many products, you can be certain I will pay attention to wha I buy in the future. I've taken in a few abuse cases and nursed them back to health. I currently have a Thoroughbred that is finally getting his weight back. When I first got him you couldn't brush him because it was just skin and bones and it hurt hi . Now about 150 more pounds and he'll be good as new (as new as possible for a 20 year old). Thanks for the great info.

Wonderful site! My hat's off to you courageous people. The idea of leasing never sat right with me. It was suggested to me as a way to stretch the dollar on a limited budget, but I couldn't see the ethics in asking someone else to PAY to clean out your st ble, groom your horse, etc. If I need such things done, then I either have to do the paying or work out some other reciprocal arrangement. After reading here about leased horses being sold out from under their owners, I'd definitely never, ever, consider leasing arrangement. Thank you for the information you supply. My heart goes out to these (and all) unfortunate animals. For anything positive to be done, it seems that extremely self-serving lot, known to the world at large as politicians, have to be made responsible for som thing besides collecting prestige & fat pensions. They are the most non-credible group of human beings in existence, mainly because they don't have to keep the promises they made in order to garner votes. Well, the creatures represent US (isn't that what hey're always crowing about?) and we'd better put the pressure on, hard, loud, and unceasing. Keep up the excellent work!

I have spent the past several years buying and healing abused horses so I know that abuse is out there. The racing industry is simply creul; it not only abuses the horses physically but mentally as well. I agree that there are some very poor slaughter h uses, yet I have to say that some of them are run rather well. I've actually been to one slaughter house where they treat the horses extremely well. It hurts to see an animal go to slaughter, I agree, especially when they are young and full of potential but if it weren't for slaughter houses there'd be old dead animals out in the ditches and back bushes. At least this way they can feed a hungrey dog or cat. Otherwise, how would our other pets eat? I think that there should simply be stiff laws set ou for the slaughter houses. Tours should be available to anyone who thinks that they are creul. After all, if they aren't doing anything wrong, why would they be trying to hide it? The laws have to get tougher, I agree, but please don't blame every plac simply over a few places. It would be like saying that every horseman beats their horses simply because two other horsemen did. I realize that I live in a different area than most of these articles point to, maybe that's the difference, for all I know ur country has stiffer laws. Thank you for your site. It's great that someone is finally speaking out against abuse on a large scale.

we just bought property approx. 2.5 miles away from Nickerson Livestock. It makes me crazy to pass his place and see so many healthy looking horses going to slaughter. Healthy or not, I can't stand what they are doing to these wonderful animals. There ust be a way to stop them. Politicans are a waste of time! I haven't met one yet that really cares about anyone or anything but him/herself. I have the property, but I don't live there full time or I would do my best to take these animals and let them ive with dignity on our 22 acres. If I can really help, I would truly like to.

Howdy! You have done a lot of good work putting this page together and the passion shows. I do have a different view of Amory than the article protrays being an Retired NPS Ranger and Resource Manager; I followed both burro situations in Grand Canyon an Death Valley, and his view point and comments are a bit slanted and not totally accurate portrayal of all involved. Basically the burros are an exotic species and they were damaging the habitat of native wildlife, most specifically desert bighhorn sheep Enough said and not intended as a criticism of the Page, but another view point on Amory. Keep up the strong efforts as the bottomline is all critters should be treated humanely and not abused.

I founded an adoption program for displaced equines of all breeds, but it mainly serves the Standardbreds, as there is not a lot of regard for their lives when they cannot race competitively. Our group, HORSE LOVERS UNITED, INC., has more more than 60 ho ses in new homes in the last 6 years and I am hoping to increase that number in the future with more help and more funds.
