NEW YORK and PENNSYLVANIA

Trooper Thomas Garcia

Here's the story of the "Horse Popsicle Case": New York State Trooper Garcia had been on duty all night when he found David Carper (of Frank Carper & Sons) parked in a rest area. It was time for his shift to end and most troopers would not have done anything, but Trooper Garcia woke the Assistant District Attorey up out of bed at 5AM. It was so cold their pens froze, the cameras froze, their hands were freezing to the trailers.

These brave and caring individuals SET A PRECEDENT with this case! Because of their involvement, Pennsylvania is finally moving forward on this kind of abuse, and enforcement has been stepped up in New York State.

State Trooper Thomas Garcia has over 200 arrests involving the illegal transport of horses. And, like the "Energizer Bunny" he keeps on going!

New York State Troopers Kevin Sturmer and Terry Ginyard, who have both arrested ARLOW KIEHL, Watertown, NY of illegally transporting horses.

ADA Eichan, who went to trial in April of this year against KEVIN NICKERSON of Nickerson Livestock, Bainbridge, NY, and won. She pushed for, and received, maximum fines.

Former NYS ADA Debra Whitson, now with the NYS Attorney General's office. SHE prosecuted DAVID CARPER.

Schroon Lake, NY, Justice Jean R. Strothenke has consistently been taking a very tough stand against the pond scum.

Our intrepid team of horse transporters, who against all adversity such as lack of permits and licenses, and convictions and fines, continue to torture horses. The PA State Police, who are starting to hang out at the New Holland Sales Stables in response to complaints.

An emailed message from Pennsylvania: "Department of Agriculture officials have met with the manager of the New Holland facility for the purpose of conveying some general concerns with regard to animal management."

AND ELSEWHERE.........!

Unbelieveably, the San Jose Mercury News in San Jose California has taken a stance AGAINST Propositions 4 (outlawing leg hold traps) and 6 (outlawing slaughtering horses for purpose of human consumption. Their editorial was entitled "HORSES ARE PETS?  WELL, THEY'RE MOSTLY LIVESTOCK -- VOTE NO ON PROP 6".  This was published on Wednesday, October 7, 1998.  They ended by saying "If it matters to the proponents of Proposition 6, let them buy all the horses and find homes for them."  They state that "the proponents of Proposition 6 propose that all sick, old or unwanted horses be allowed to live out their last days in a pasture"; that's totally wrong. Responsible horse owners are not idiots, unlike the writer of this article, and we know that while a nice idea, it is totally unworkable.  It does not cost hundreds of dollars to euthanize a large animal.  It will usually cost less than $100.00 including the cost of having the rendering works haul the body away, and less if you deliver the animal to them. They erroneously stated that the new law would make "felons out of horse owners who sell to the wrong buyer."  The truth is that it would make it a misdemeanor to sell horsemeat for human consumption. The felons would be the people who are breaking the law by receiving, possessing and transporting these animals for human consumption.  The current regulations regarding the transport of horses are not enforced. One of the problems is not the legal owners selling animals but the great deal of horse stealing that goes on.  It is extremely hard to track down an animal once it has been stolen. The writer seems to find nothing wrong with "...horses bound for slaughter are often mistreated. They are crowded into trucks designed for smaller animals, unable to raise their heads.  They are trucked for days without food or water to plants in Texas, Nebraska or Canada." stating that "it doesn't matter to the horse whether it's buried, rendered or sauteed."  Passing this proposition would not hurt anyone, the fiscal impact is minimal and it just might save some animals from a horrible fate.

Lt. Gary Gold of the Cleveland County, NC Sherrif's Department for tracking down the "ALLEGED" HORSE THIEF that stole Idaho. You may remember that Idaho was stolen and sold a year ago by the person who leased him. Lt Gold must have had to do a lot of washing after wading through all those scum infested auctions. Isn't horse theft punishable by hanging??

Ralph Lauren, who has used the image of the horse and horsesports for years to promote his "Polo" and "Thoroughbred" luxury lifestyle product lines, has a new line of boots made out of "ponyskin" (actually cowhide dyed to look like a pony hide). You're a real winner, Ralph!

American Airlines, for transporting horsemeat.

Christensen's Tack Shops, in Cupertino and Loomis, CA
for their insensitivity regarding an e-mailed request asking them to please not sell Quest because of its association with Premarin.

Here's their response to the above message (Aug.8/98 1:50pm):

"You forgot don't sell lead ropes because they use cotton & thus abuse plants. Also don't forget brass snaps because mining is bad for native peruvian pasos. Please don't buy breeches made by Kathy Lee Giffords Children, and last but not least avoid bits made with Chinese prison labor. Kill them all, let god sort it out. Get a life"
You care so little about the well-being of horses, and yet you make your living off them. What's wrong with this picture??

American Home Products should get an award for brazenness: A recent television ad for Advil, made by AHP, shows a well-groomed and cared-for horse being saddled by his rider. Just one of your PMU horses, perhaps?

T-shirts & bumperstickers for the CA vote to ban slaughter are available at this website
