Performing temperament tests on litters can help provide the breeder and prospective owners with a base by which to determine each puppy's personality. When properly structured, these tests can be a fairly reliable predicator of the dog's adult personality, sociability, and potential trainability. There is no way for a puppy to "fail" these tests. Results serve instead as indicators used to match the puppy's temperament with the most suitable future environment and possible "employment." Keep in mind there is always the "nature versus nurture" argument. Temperament testing can advise people as to where a puppy will best "fit in" but then the development of the puppy's personality is really up to the new owners.
There are eleven standard tests to be performed on each puppy, (most trainers/evaluators will use at least some variation of all eleven) and then results are used in conjunction to give the final evaluation. Tests should occur when the puppies are seven weeks old, between the 45th and 52nd days. The tests must be given at a neutral time of day, in an area unfamiliar to the puppies, and administered by someone the puppies have not met. Below is a list of the eleven common "tests":
Approach
Social Acceptance
Following
Restraint
Forgiveness
Elevation
Retrieving
Touch Sensitivity
Sound Sensitivity
Sight Sensitivity
Structure
Remember that no puppy can fail any test. And if you are a new puppy owner, don't be alarmed if your puppy wasn't given a temperament test! Most temperament tests are administered because specific qualities are desired, usually qualities pertaining to service. Lastly keep in mind that any results may not determine what the puppy will act like during puberty, and undesirable behaviors can be prevented with a little work and lots of love.
