"Rose And Allied
Families" is a book written by George H. Rose who spent over twenty
years researching his family’s history. His research took him to
Missouri, Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia where he gathered information
from interviews, family bibles, and legal documents from county clerk’s
offices. In his book he shares all the information he gathered on his
ancestors, however, much of the book goes into great detail of the various legal
transactions of tends to get a bit lengthy. In reading it I thought it would
be nice to have a condensed or paraphrased version which focuses on the more
interesting facts he gathered. So, I’ve taken the liberty of doing that
on the following pages.
George indicates that
he was able to trace our roots back to William Rose who arrived in
Virginia from Scotland with his wife Anne in 1650. However, in
October 1999, I found an organization on the
World Wide Web called "The Rose Family
Association Nationwide" and sent an e-mail to its founder, Christine
Rose of San Jose, California. She replied and informed me that she assisted
George for almost 3 years in verifying Rose family data. She
believed there was a "weak link" in his information and that
there is no real proof that Robert Rose4 was the son of
Richard Rose3
as George indicated in his book. According to Christine, George
later told her that he regretted including the Roses prior to Robert 4
in
his book, admitting that he lacked the records to absolutely prove the
association.
Although there is no real proof
that our ancestors came from Scotland as George indicated, the fact remains that
William and Anne Rose did arrive in Virginia from Scotland around 1650.
Many settlers migrated down to North Carolina from Virginia. So, it
is quite possible that Robert was a relative of William or at least of Scottish
decent. Because of that possibility I decided to include the
Scottish Rose Family coat of arms, tartan and motto in this document.
However, in the following pages I will only include information on our proven
ancestors starting with Robert 4 . On this site I will
refer to Robert 4 (as referenced in "Rose and Allied
Families" as Robert 1 (first generation on record), being the earliest proven member of our family on record.
I do not take credit for
the following information, but present it in a simplified, condensed version for
convenience sake. I took the liberty of paraphrasing some of George’s’
statements for clarity. References to the page numbers in the book are given for
verification. I hope you enjoy this condensed version of "Rose And
Allied Families" By: George H. Rose, Paraphrased by: Douglas C.
Rose.
