Background: Robert is our earliest ancestor who can be
traced with certainty. Robert has numerous records of land transactions wherein he bought
and sold many hundreds of acres in Edgecomb County, North Carolina. He was most likely a
tobacco farmer who would sell off large portions of land after two or three crops had been
harvested. This was normal for tobacco farmers as the soil could only support several
crops.
In his will Robert mentions his children: "I give and bequeath unto my son
Reuben Rose five shillings. ...my daughter Sarah Canady twenty pounds ten shillings and
one feather bed, and furniture. ... my daughter Elizabeth Trevathan wife of Henry
Trevathan, twelve pounds & ten shillings. And the residue of my estate to be equally
divided between my sons William Rose, Aaron Rose, Matthew Rose, my daughters Sarah Canady
and Elizabeth Trevathan equally to be divided between the five..." Robert Rose was
about 89 at the time of his death. It seems that his wife died before him. The 1810 census
shows a female in the household of an age to have been Roberts wife. It is likely
that she died at some time between 1810 and 1816 when Roberts will was drawn. It is
apparent from the land records that Robert tried in an orderly way to see his sons
established around him. It is to be regretted that a fuller indication of his character
and personality is not available. We naturally wonder why he cut Reuben off with five
shillings.
