Lula Belle's Page
This page I am dedicating to my grandmother I never knew, Lula Belle Smith.  I feel she wants her story told, for she won't leave my thoughts or my research on others.  There's not a lot I know about her yet, I am still gathering information.  Ever since I started researching my mothers family Lula Belle has been there.  I first started with my grandfather Irvin Clay Yocom, but the information on Lula Belle was always right there, so I decided okay Lula Belle you must want your story told, so here goes, what little I know.
Lula Belle Smith was born May 30,1878 in Kings Mountain, Kentucky.  Her parents were James Crim Smith and Sarah Ann Walls.  Here is a list of her brothers and sisters:
Mary Lucinda Smith b. February 23,1869 d. November 25,1944
Nancy J Smith b. 1871, Lincoln Co. Kentucky
William A Smith b. August 1873, Lincoln Co. Kentucky
Edward Smith b. December 1876, Lincoln Co. Kentucky
Grover C. Smith b. February 1885, Lincoln Co. Kentucky

New information shows that Frankie and Anna were William A. Smiths daughters.
Frankie Smith b. November 1896, Lincoln Co. Kentucky
Anna Smith b. January 1898, Lincoln Co. Kentucky
Lula Belle Smith married Irvin Clay Yocom on April 20th, 1899, in Lincoln County, Kentucky.  Irvin was 26 and his occupation was listed as a railroader. Lula Belle was 21.   See marriage bond.

After their marriage Lula Belle started her family which is as follows:
J.C. Yocom b. September 10,1901 in Lincoln Co., Kentucky d. November 22, 1966 in Sulphur, La.
Effie Lou Yocom b. September 21,1903 in Lincoln Co., Kentucky d. in Lake Charles, La.
Della Clay Yocom b. September 24,1905 in Lincoln Co., Kentucky d. December 4, 1981 in Thibodeaux La.
Stella Ora Yocom b. March 24, 1908 in Lincoln Co.,Kentucky d. November 2,1982 in Houston,Texas.
Charles Lastie Yocom b. October 17, 1910 in Vinton, La. d. October 27, 1923 in Lake Charles La.
Marjorie Violet Yocom b. January 17,1915 in Vinton, La.
Genevie Yocom b. September 9,1917 in Vinton, La. d. April 29,1998 in Vinton, La.
Sometime between 1908 and 1910 my grandfather was transferred to Vinton with the railroad company he worked for.  My mother always said her mother didn't want to move to Vinton and waited for the day they could return to Kentucky.
In the census for 1920 it list the Yocoms still living in Vinton and my grandfather was working as a town electrician by then.
In 1923 Lastie who was 13 died.  My mom said he died from ruptured appendix he suffered when thrown from a horse.  He was buried in the Big Woods Cemetery in Edgerly, Louisiana.
Lula Belle never got her wish to return to Kentucky.  In 1933 my grandfather entered the state mental hospital in Jackson, Louisiana.  My mother said that Lula Belle became ill after that and "took to the bed."
In 1936 my grandmother died, she was only 57 years old.  Her obituary states that her mother was still living at the time of her death, but as for as I know she did not attend the funeral.  I feel like Sarah never saw her daughter after she left Kentucky and she never saw her last three grandchildren.  Irvin could not attend his wife's funeral either and died the next year, 1937.
Lula Belle was laid to rest beside her son in Big Woods Cemetery and Irvin was laid to rest along side her the following year.
