" Our g-grandfather ,Kyle Topping, was born in a log cabin in Wayne County,WV on April 17, 1886.. But he lived most of his life in Lincoln County,WV (since 1904). He became a school teacher at the age of 17 and taught school in Lincoln and Logan counties for 12 years. He was paid $ 30.00 a month. Our g-grandfather had many jobs, though, besides teaching school. He was a member of the Lincoln County Board of Education (from 1942-1952), a state legislator, a deputy sheriff, a logger,a farmer, and he also worked on the railroad. His hobby was collecting and writing history of Lincoln county people and events. He wrote a book about the first schools in Harts Creek. One of the best stories in the book describes the first school in Harts. This school was located up the West Fork of Big Harts Creek. the school building was an old hunter's cabin. Kyle said the teacher had to take a gun with him on the walk to school because there were wild animals in the woods. The school building had no wooden floor and sometimes the kids would "stump" their toes on briers growing from the dirt floor. He also wrote and told many stories about the Indians whom he believed used to have a settlement ,here,in Harts. Our g-grandfather's given name was Kiel. He was named for his mother's surname. He said his mom's dad couldn't speak English fluently. He was from Germany. Later, though, our g-grandfather changed his name to Kile and even later,to the more traditional version , Kyle. Kyle's dad's name was Gilbert topping and his paternal grandfather was Johnny Topping. Johnny lived to be 102 years of age. He was also captured during the Civil War and held prisoner in KY for the duration of the war. Johnny Topping came from England. Brad and Courtney |
