London, England April 1999

In April we packed up the car and made the seven hour trip through Germany and Belgium, to Calais in the northwestern corner of France. From there we drove on to the ferry and sailed across the 25 miles of the English Channel.  Only about an hour on the ferry and we could see the White Cliffs of Dover.  Beautiful site.  We stayed the first night in Dover and then toured the Kent and Romney Marsh areas the next day.

We went for a great steam engine ride through the countryside.  Sheep everywhere (which is how the area got the name Romney Marsh... Romney sheep - which happens to be my favorite wool to spin).  Here's Daniel in his favorite train, Thomas!  Thomas is very popular in England as it was in Scotland and we were able to pick up a few Thomas goodies while we were there.

We were in London for four days and the absolute highlight of the trip was going to the theatre to see "Beauty and The Beast".  It was very expensive (almost $200 for the three of us), but worth every cent.  We figured we'd get the best seats we could since we may never have a chance to do it again and we wanted Daniel to have a good view.  He was mezmerized for three solid hours.  So were we.  We couldn't believe the special effects and the way they were able to change the stage and characters so quickly. It was pure magic.  We were there for a couple of days before we got brave and jumped on one of the double decker buses.  It was so much easier than walking (I was seven months at the time and Daniel was beat from all the walking) and the buses let people off every few blocks.  We had a train card that also covered the buses, so we could get on and off as we pleased.
