If You Would like to import some of the data from our Family Tree you will need a copy of the software that was used here (or a similar genealogy program) installed on your hard drive. Then take the steps listed below to import the information that is of interest to you.

THE SOFTWARE

The information on our family tree was stored and displayed using a software program called Personal Ancestral File. This shareware program is provided at no cost by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. To obtain your free copy, go to http://www.familysearch.org. On the home page click on "ORDER FAMILY HISTORY RESOURCES." When you are moved to the page of Resources, click on "Software Downloads - Free." Then select Item # 36100999, Personal Ancestral File. You will need your copy of Personal Ancestral File installed on your computer before you use a GEDCOM file to obtain the information that you want.

A GEDCOM FILE IS: GEDCOM is the acronym for "GEnealogical Data COMmunications." This computer data format was created by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for storing genealogical information so that many computer programs can use the same data. There is a GEDCOM file located right in the Table of Contents after the first person listed for each family branch. That GEDCOM file contains all of the data about that particular branch of our family. Save that GEDCOM file to a floppy disk or your hard drive. Then follow the instructions below to import that GEDCOM file into your genealogy program.

INSTRUCTIONS to import a GEDCOM file into your Personal Ancestry File (or other genealogy) program.

1. From the File menu in Personal Ancestry File, click "Import."
2. Select the drive and folder where the file is located.
3. Select the file.
4. Click Import.
5. Choose from import options you want
6. To import the file, click OK.
7. If Personal Ancestral File finds any problems with the file, it opens Notepad to display an import log. You can print this report.
8. Click OK to close the box that tells you how many individuals were imported.
Tip: To import the file into a new database, you must first create a new database, then import the GED file into it. 9. Personal Ancestral File asks if you want to view instructions on how to link the data you imported. Click Yes or No. Tip: If you click Yes, the help system opens to a topic that is titled "Working with imported information."
If you have any difficulties working with the GEDCOM file you will have to use the HELP program in Personal Ancestry File. You are on your own. Good Luck!
