Six Strip Granny Afghan

SIZE- Approximately 45" x 70"

MATERIALS:

Color A: 16 oz.
Color B: 36 oz.

Note: If you plan to make the strips look like 5" squares, you would need 10 different colors. In my sample diagram, I used the following:
Brown, Gold, Light Green, Yellow, Dark Rust, Medium Green, Orange, Light Rust, Dark Green, and Dark Gold

Crochet Hook- Size H

Strip 1: With Color B, chain 19. Row 1: Work 2 dc in fourth ch from hook. *skip next 2 ch, 3 dc in next ch, repeat from * four times (Mark this side of work). "Hint: I like to use a short piece of yarn of a contrasting color to mark my work, or a small safety pen."

Row 2: Chain 3, turn, 3 dc in each space between dc groups, ending by working dc in top of turning ch.

Row 3: Chain 3, turn, 2 dc in first space, 3 dc in each space across.

Rows 4-9: Repeat Rows 2 and 3, 3 times more.

Row 10: Repeat Row 2 once. If you are using 10 different colors, you would change color at the end of Row 10.

Continue to repeat Rows 3 and 2 changing colors every 10 rows until 14 different color squares have been completed. If you are using the same color for the main body of the strips, you would continue until you had completed 140 rows.

Strip Edging: Hold Strip B with marked side facing and marked row at right-hand side. Working on long edge only, join Color A in seventeenth chain of beginning chain-19.

Row 1: Chain 3, work 3 dc in each space along side edge; chain 3, turn.

Row 2: Work 3 dc in each space across, working last 3 dc in beginning chain 3 space; finish off.

Work opposite side of strip in same manner, with unmarked side facing, join yarn in first chain of beginning chain-19 and repeat Rows 1 and 2. Repeat for Strips C. D, and E. Repeat on inner edges only of Strips A and F.

Joining: Make sure marked side of each strip is facing youu and beginning of each strip is at lower edge. Yarn is to be held beneath work, hook inserted from top to botton and yarn drawn up from beneath work to top of work. Have Strips A and B side by side, join yarn with slip stitch in one stitch at corner of edge to be joined on first piece, chain 1, slip stitchin same stitch as joining, then slip stitch in next stitdh of first piece, them corresponding stitch of second piece. Continue in this manner to top of strip. Repeat instructions to join remaining strips in alphabetical order.

NOTE: I have also joined the strips using a yarn needle, and find that this looks just as good. To join this way, place the two pieces with marked sides facing each other. With Yarn needle, pull yarn through the corresponding stitches of each strip until you reach the end of the strips. This is a whip stitch.

Afghan Edging: With marked side facing, join Color A in any space along long side of Strip A.

Round 1: Chain 3, 2 dc in same space, *3 in each space to corner , work 3 dc chain 3, 3 dc in corner. 3 dc in each space to next corner.* Repeat from * to * joining with a slip stitch in top of ch 3. Slip stitch in next two stitches to the next space.

Round 2: Chain 3, 2 dc in same space, work 3 dc each space around working ( 3 dc, chain 3, 3 dc in each chain 3 corner space, join with a slip stitch in beginning chain 3.

Round 3: Chain 1, sc in same stitch as joining, single crochet in next double crochet, make a picot as follows: Chain 3, slip stitch in first chain stitch (picot made), *single crochet in each of next 3 stitches, work picot; repeat from * around, ending single crochet in next double crochet, join with slip stitch in beginning chain-1; finish off.
