RETA NADINE NEAL
Decatur
Reta Nadine Neal, 81, died at 2:59 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, in Decatur Memorial Hospital. Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 1999 in the Dawson and Wikoff Funeral Home, Mt. Zion. Burial was in Point Pleasant Cemetery, Long Creek. Mrs. Neal was born in Marble Hill, Mo., the daughter of Oscar and Beulah (Schram) Threlkeld. She formerly worked as a seamstress for both Osgood Dress Factory and Eldorado Apparel in Decatur. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Mt. Zion and A.A.R.P. She married Byford L. Neal on Dec. 3, 1939. He preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 1994. Surviving are two sons, Byford D. Neal and wife Joann, Larry D. Neal and wife Lucy, all of Decatur; three grandchildren, Sheila Drum and husband Patrick of Long Creek, Michael Neal and wife Amanda of Indianapolis, Ind.and Scott Neal and wife Amy of Decatur; five great-grandchildren; Mallory and Brianna Drum of Long Creek, Kristina and Aaron Neal of Indianapolis, Ind. and Brandon Neal of Decatur; sister, Callie Russell and husband Jerry of Benton; and sister-in-law, Wanda Threlkeld of Benton. Mrs. Neal was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and four brothers.

ROBERT NEWBERRY
Louisville
Robert Newberry, 40, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999 in the Carl Hospital, Champaign. No services will be held. The Neal Funeral Home of Louisville is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Newberry was born on March 23, 1959, in Christopher, the son of James Coy and Mary (Grabarich) Newberry. They are both deceased. Survivors include a brother, James Coy Newberry Jr. of Colp; four sisters, Barbara Pickerill of Decatur, Shirley Robinson Mt. Vernon, and Linda Robinson, Colp, Betty Short of Christopher.

ALBERTA J. NOVAK
Clarendon
Alberta J. Novak, 86, of Holley-Byron Road in Clarendon, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999 at Lakeside Memorial Hospital. She was born Oct. 9, 1912 in West Frankfort and had lived in the Clarendon area since 1952. Mrs. Novak worked for 21 years at Rochester Products, retiring from there in 1973. She was preceded in death by her husband George in 1951 and her son George in 1983. She is survived by her son Roger (Silva) Novak, Clarendon; daughter Mary Lou (Cecil) Moore, Clarendon; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held Monday, Aug. 23, at the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Clarendon Emergency Squad or the American Cancer Society. Local arrangements were handled by the Morton and Johnston Funeral Home in Benton.

RONALD TROY OVERTURF
Mulkeytown
Ronald Troy Overturf, 56, of 11471 Ward Rd., died at his home at 5:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999. Graveside services will be held Friday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. in the Harrison Cemetery in Buckner. There will be no visitation and friends should meet at the cemetery. Mr. Overturf was born on March 25, 1943, in Chicago, the son of Ervin and Irene (Taylor) Overturf of Royalton. He was formerly married to Mary Chambliss. He was a truck driver and a member of the Machinist Union. Surviving are his parents, two daughters, Donna Marcus of Christopher, Debbie Bopp of St. Louis, Mo.; one son, Dave Overturf of Johnston City; six grandchildren; one sister, Paula and two brothers Mark and Richard. He was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Overturf.

RUDOLPH PALADA

Rudolph "Rudy" Palada, 84, of 904 S. Locust, Sesser, died at the Vasey Care Center, Mt. Vernon, 3:05 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at the Vasey Care Center in Mt. Vernon. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, in the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Cook officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation is after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Palada was born on Jan. 10, 1915, in Sesser, the son of Anthony and Andreanna Palada. He was married to Ribella (Pratili) Palada. She surives. He was secretary & treasurer of Local Union 682 in St. Louis, Mo. In addition to his wife, Andrenna, he is survived by one sister, Mary Polansky of Florence, Mo. Mr. Palada was preceded in death by his parents, one son and one daughter, two brothers and one sister.

SIDNEY BENNETT PAGE SR.
Newton
Sidney Bennett Page Sr. 84, died at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, in the Ridgeview Care Center, Oblong. Services were held at noon Monday, Aug. 30, 1999, at the Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton. Gary Hall officiated and burial was in Westlawn Cemetery, Newton. Sidney was born Oct. 12, 1914, in Benton, the son of Marion Cephas and Nell (LeMaster) Page. He graduated from the Harrisburg High School in 1932 and married Louise Vaughn on Aug. 26, 1934 in Vandalia. Mr. Page owned and operated Page's Printing and Office Suppies in Newton for years. He also owned the Mentor Democrat which was later bought out by the Newton Press-Mentor. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Newton and had served on the Board of Education for the Newton Grade School and also as the president of the board. He was a member of the Jasper County Country Club, Newton Masonic Lodge #216, a life member of the Olney Elks Club. He also served as the president and secretary of the Board of Education for the Newton Community High School. He served on the Board of Supervisors for the Jasper County Board and the Jasper County Fair Board. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Louise, of Newton; a son, Sidney B. Page Jr. and wife Jane of Ewing; two grandsons Sidney B, Page III and wife Cindy of Benton, Doug and wife Tammy Page of Newton; four great-grandchildren. Mr. Page was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Memorials may be made to the Newton High School Academic Foundation.

SHIRLEY PARKER

Shirley Parker, 71, of 4114 Park St. Road, died on Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, in Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, Mo. Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m., Dec. 29, 1999, in the Gilbert Funeral Home, Christopher, with the Rev. Jerry Aken officiating. Burial will be in the Mulkeytown Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Tuesday to the funeral home. Mrs. Parker was born on Oct. 10, 1928, in Christopher, the daughter of Gaylord W. and Ruth (Stone) Fox. She was a retired bookeeper who worked in Chicago. She was of the Methodist faith. Survivors include three brothers, Gaylord L. Fox of Liberty, Mo., Robert G. Fox of Tillamok, Ore. Vern R. Fox of Orlando, Fla.; one sister, Ruth Ann Szymanski of Douglasville, Ga.

Lola Parrott, 79, of 2416 VanZant St., died at 6:08 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, in St. Louis University Hospital. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Gilbert Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dean Guymon officiating. Burial will be in the Mulkeytown Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 this evening to the funeral home. Mrs. Parrott was born on May 5, 1920 in Mulkeytown, the daughter of John W. and Della G. (Wolfe) Ramsey. She was married on June 30, 1937, to Lee Virgil Parrott, who died June 12, 1993. She was a member of the Mulkeytown Christian Church. Survivors include two daughters, Sherri Phillips of Tamaroa and Carolyn VanZandt of Belle Rive; three grandchildren, Michael VanZandt, Zachary Phillips, Carli Phillips and one brother, Loren Ramsey of Mulkeytown. GLORIA KAY PASKO
Buckner
Gloria Kay Pasko, 65, of Buckner, departed this life on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999 in Buckner. She was born Jan. 3, 1934 to Clifton and Lillian (Leek) Maple in Elkville. She was united in marriage to Steve Pasko on Aug. 10, 1957, in Du Quoin. They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a crowning ceremony in the Orthodox Church in Buckner on Aug. 22, 1982. Together they had two children, Stephan "Ted" Pasko and Michelle "Missy" Witges. She graduated from SIUC in 1956 with a teaching degree. She went on to mold young lives in Zeigler in 1956 to 1957 in Bernillo, N.M. in 1957 to 59 and in Schoolkraft, MI in 1966-71. In 1971 she returned to Southern Illinois with her family. She returned to school and graduated Cum Laude from Rend Lake College with an RN degree in 1977. She went on to receive her nursing home administrators license and was administrator of Redwood Manor in Sesser, from 1979 until March of 1999. She retired in March of this year to spend time with her family and church. She was a member of the Orthodox Church in Buckner and Royalton from 1981. She was very active in the church. She was a member of the Altar Society and the choir. She also prepared the church bulletin and newsletter. She is survived by her husband, Deacon Stefan of Buckner; a daughter, Michelle Witges and husband Joe, of Mulkeytown; a sister, Alice Mortenson and husband Steve of St. Helens, MI.; three grandsons, Matthew Pasko of Buckner, Zachary and Jacob Witges of Mulkeytown; several nieces, nephews and cousins, a daughter- in-law, Brenda of Christopher and an aunt, Margaret Huffman of Springfield, Mo. Preceding her in death were her mother, Lillian, in 1959, her father, Clifton, in 1990, her son, Ted, in 1991 and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral Liturgy will be at 10 a.m.Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999 at the Orthodox Church in Buckner, with Father John Peck officiating. V. Ruth Whetstone Payne, 76, of 516 East Taylor St., on Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999 in Franklin Hospital, Benton. Services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 30, at 1 p.m. in the Poulson Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Ellsworth officiating. Burial will be in Phillips Cemetery, Ewing. Friends may call from 6 to 8 this evening at the funeral home. Mrs. Payne was born in Akin on July 16, 1923, the daughter of Oscar and Monnie (Summers) Whetstone. She was married to Francis Lewis Payne, who died Sept. 21, 1981. She was a homemaker and a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Survivors include one son, David L. Payne and wife Paula of Benton; a daughter, Roberta L. and husband Robert Eldridge of West Frankfort; grandchildren, Cory Payne of Benton and Brian and Terry Steinmetz, both of West Frankfort; three brothers, James Whetstone of Peoria, Ronald Whetstone of Peoria, Kenneth Whetstone of Washington; five sisters, Audrey Hart of Decatur, Sybil Brandhorst of Pontiac, Helen Burtrum of California, Wilma Schaffer of Minneapolis, Minn., and Imogene Secreton of Peoria. Ronald H. Pearson, 57, of 5877 E. Yung St., died at 6:15 a.m. in his home on Sunday Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, in the Gilbert Funeral Home, Christopher. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Du Quoin. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday to the funeral home. Mr. Pearson was born in Galesburg on Dec. 5, 1941, the son of Herman and Elsie (Sloan) Pearson. He was a retired coal miner, having last worked at Old Ben 26 mine. Survivors include his mother of Christopher; two sons, Eric and wife Shanna Pearson of Sesser, Cleave Pearson, Sesser; their mother, Phyllis Jean Pearson of Sesser; two special friends, Susan and Ashley Cockel; grandchildren, Rachel, Alex, Max; a brother, Donald Pearson of Fort Charlotte, Fla. He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Edgar "Eddie" Pearson. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.

EARNIE HENRY PERRUQUET

Earnie Henry Perruquet, Sr., 89, of 204 Sims St., died at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999 at the V.A. Medical Center in Marion. Mr. Perruquet was born Oct. 5, 1909 in Centralia, the son of Joe and Estelle (Carrell) Perruquet. He married Hazel L. Donelson on Dec. 14, 1945, in Murphysboro. She survives in Royalton. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, at Vantrease Funeral Home in Royalton, with Brother Tim Sadler and Brother Jim Ebbbs officiating. Burial will be at Miners Cemetery, east of Royalton with military rites by the Zeigler American Legion. Visiting hours are after 9 a.m. Friday until time of service at the funeral home. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Royalton. He served in the Army from 1928 to 1931 and was a member of the Zeigler Eagles Lode. A one time coal miner, he had also worked at the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant, and was the owner of Perky's Grocery Stores in Herrin and Dowell. In addition to his wife Hazel, he is survived by six sons and four daughters-in-law, Danny and Katrina Francis of Watertown, Ny, Earnie and Sherian Perruquet Jr. of Royalton, Joe and James Perruquet of Joliet, Donnie and Kathy Perruquet of Franklin, Ky., Larry Perruquet of Anna and Sally Myers of Christopher; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Estella and Jon Dawson of Zeigler, Fern and Dan Kalis of Custer, Mich. and Ila Couch of Franklin, Ky.; two sisters, Evon Waldon of Marsielles and Josephine Patton of Royalton; 30 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who loved him very much. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Frankie Myers; three grandchildren and two sisters. Kenneth "KO" Phillips, 81, died at the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna, on Sunday, June 20, 1999. Services will be held Tuesday, June 22, at 1 p.m. in the Gilbert Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jerry Aken officiating. Burial will be in the Mulkeytown Cemetery. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Tuesday until time of service at the funeral home. Mr. Phillips was born on Feb. 16, 1918, in Christopher, the son of Charles and Minerva Lang (Phillips). He was an antique dealer and a retired World War II veteran of the Air Force. He is survived by a brother, Bill Phillips and wife Shirley of Burns, Oregon, Pat "Bud" Phillips of Christopher; a sister, Ethel Lee and husband Charles Baul of Houston, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Helen Phillips of Markham, Jean Ann Phillips of Du Quoin; several nieces and nephews. LEGO "BEANIE" PICANTINE

Lego "Beanie" Picantine, 76, died at 11:55 a.m. on Monday, June 14, 1999, in the Franklin Hospital, Benton. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 17, at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home with the Rev. Loyd Lasley officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday to the funeral home. Mr. Picantine was born in Keota, Mo. on March 18, 1921, the son of George and Delcisa (Ricci) Picantine. He married the former Mable Frost on Feb. 8, 1955 in Benton. She survives. He was a retired coal miner and veteran of World War II. He was a member of the UMWA, of American Legion Post 280 in Benton and a life member of the Benton VFW and DAV. He was an Army veteran of World War II. In addition to his wife Mable, he is survived by one son, Ronald Willis and wife Sue of Benton; two daughters, Vivian Hammers and husband Leon of Benton, Dee Mercer and husband Mike of Herrin; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Clausen of Chicago; four brothers, Allen Picantine and wife Opal of Melbourne, Fla. John Picantine and wife Lauretta of Benton, Walter Piacentini and wife Mary of Sesser, Leo Picantine and wife Mary of Lyons. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, John; one sister Ida; and by two brothers, Nello and Claude.

John A. Picantine, 82, died at 1:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22, 1999 in the Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, in the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. Dale Carson officiating. Burial, with military rites by the Benton VFW and American Legion Posts will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday to the funeral home. Mr. Picantine was born in Keota, Mo. on Dec. 17, 1916 to George & Delcisa (Ricci) Picantine. He married Lauretta Bends on Feb. 1, 1947, at the Warren Park Presbyterian Church in Cicero. She survives. Retired from International Harvester in Broadview after 30 years of service, he was a past president of Local #688 of the UAW-CIO for 10 years. John was a life member and past Commander of the Benton VFW Post #2671. He was a member of the Benton Boccie Club. Mr. Picantine served four years in the Army Engineers as a Staff Sgt.; 37 months of that time was spent overseas in the South Pacific Theatre. He was awarded the Bronze Star for the campaign on Luzon Island, and participated in the liberation of the Phillipines. Survivors include his wife, Lauretta Picantine of Benton; two daughters, Suzanne Juriss and husband Joseph of Indianapolis, Ind, Claudia Ryba and husband Gene of Downers Grove; two grandchildren; Jason Juriss and Joanne Juriss, both of Indianapolis, Ind. four stepgrandchildren: Michael, Michelle, Christopher and Jeanne Ryba, all of the Chicago area; three brothers, Floyd Alan Picantine and wife Opal of Melbourne, Fla, Joseph Leo Pacentini and wife Mary of Lyons, Raymond Walter Piacentini and wife Mary of Sesser; one sister, Mary Clausen of Chicago; several nieces and nephews. Richard Piercy, 59, formerly of Benton, died Saturday, June 5, 1999 in the Emergency Room of the Herrin Hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, 1999, in the Poulson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bert Mitchell officiating. Burial, with Military rites, will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery. Mr. Piercy was born on May 18, 1940, in Benton, the son of Jay Jackson and Mary Aileen (Kerley) Piercy. He had managed a Dollar Store in Oklahoma before retirment. He was a U. S. Air Force veteran and of the Baptist faith. Survivors include one son, Richard Piercy Jr. of Canada; two daughters, Marcia Wheeler of Georgia and Linda Piercy of chicago; four grandchildren; two sisters, Kindra and husband Jim Phillips of Macedonia, sue and husband amon Newberry of Texas. Emily Fay Pilson, 100, died at 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 19, 1999 at the Severin Intermediate Care Home in Benton. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, in the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, with John O'Dell officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton. Friends may call from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday to the funeral home. Mrs. Dawson was born on March 24, 1899 in Benton, the daughter of Edmond and Myrtle (Stewart) Doty. She married Clyde Eugene Pilson in 1920. She was an outstanding Christian and was an active member of the Benton Primitive Baptist Church, for many years. She is survived by one daughter, Betty Lou Dawson and husband Gale of Benton; two grandchildren, Sharon L. Pioveson. Steven G. Dawson; three great-grandchildren, Damian Dawson, Derek Dawson, Michelle Nurnberger; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pearl Hampton of Benton, Beulah Tiberend of Benton; one brother, Wyatt G. MARGARET OVERTURF PINKHAM

Margaret Overturf Pinkham, 86, a former Benton resident, died at her home, with her daughters at her bedside, on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999. Her death occurred as a result of pancreatic cancer. Margaret was born in Benton, on Aug. 22, 1913, to Marshall and Lydia Overturf. She was maried to the Rev. Paul Pinkham, who died on May 21, 1997. Mrs. Pinkham was a charter member of the North Benton Baptist Church and resided in Benton for many years. She is survived by two daughters, Sondra Gann and husband David, Janie Sue Loeschner and husband Frank; one son, Ronald Pinkham and wife Gilda; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Hazel Mumbower; one sister-in-law, Dora Gilliam. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 pm. Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. George Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton. Friends may call after 10 a.m. on Saturday until the funeral hour to the funeral home . Eva Poole, 91, died at 8:21 p.m. Friday, July 16, 1999 in Herrin Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Union Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gene Fox officiating. Burial will be in Denning Cemetery in West Frankfort. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Poole was born Nov. 16, 1907, in Morehouse, Mo., to Andrew and Della Young Arnold. She was a homemaker, and a member of the First Christian Church in West Frankfort. Survivors include five sons and three daughters-in-law, Richard and Linda Poole and James Poole, all of West Frankfort, Robert Poole of Widefield, Colo., Sterling and Frances Poole of Holden, La., and Ronnie and Rita Poole of San Antonio, Tex.; four daughters and one son-in-law, LaDonna Wertz and Sharon Upchurch of West Frankfort, Janet Hubbard of Thompsoville and Faye and Bill Buitenhis of Seely Lake, Mont.; one brother, Ervin Arnold of Ozark, Mo.; 38 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Sterling, on Feb. 20, 1976; two grandsons, one granddaughter, one great-grandson, one great-granddaughter and three sisters.

Elizabeth "Betty" Powers Pritchett, 79, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at her home in Hudson, Florida. She was born in Benton, the daughter of the late George and Nellie Powers. She moved to Hudson in 1980 from St. Louis, Mo. and was a retired realtor for L.K. Wood Realtors in St. Louis. She was a member of Shadow Lakes Home Owners Assoc. and Director for the Lakeside Club & Pool Assoc. Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Ellen and Paul Valenz, Sara "Sally" and Charles Gaddy, both of Bradenton, Fla.; a brother George Powers of California; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Ryan Gaddy and Keith Brenton (Tracy) Gaddy, two great-gandchildren, Rachael Elizabeth Gaddy and Nicole Marie Gaddy. Memorial services for Hazel May Quillman, lifetime Sesser resident, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Methodist Church of Sesser. Visitation will be after 6 this evening at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home, Sesser, and from 9 a.m. Tuesday until time of service at the church. She died Friday, Oct. 22, in Dallas, Texas, where she had recently relocated to be near her daughter, Cathy Basso. She died from complications related to her lifetime struggle with Rheumatoid Arthritis. She was 74. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Ellsworth (Ted) Quillman, who died Oct. 2, 1996. Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Quillman were pillars of the Sesser community. They owned and operated the Brayfield Funeral Home for 40 years. Born Hazel May Allen, on March 24, 1925, she was the only child of Sam and Leona Allen (Allen and Loucks grocery store on Main Street). After attending the University of Illinois, she returned to Sesser and married Ellsworth Quillman. They raised their two daughters, (Patricia Ann and Cathy Sue) in Sesser and were active supporters of local schools, churches, and community organizations. Having been stricken with Rheumatoid Arthritis as a young woman, she dedicated much of her energy to the National Arthritis Foundation. Her ivolvement included, fund raising, participating in medical research, and public appearances. She was also instrumental in the publication of an Arthritis Foundation Cookbook, which received national distribution. Following the death of her husband, she relocated to Dallas and became an active member of the Signature Point Retirement Commuity. Her interminable spirit, positive outlook, unfailing faith and quiet strength were an inspiration to all whom she touched. Mrs. Quillman is survived by two daughters, Patricia Thomas, who with husband Vernor lives in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. and Cathy Basso, who with husband Danny, lives in Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren, Brent Thomas of Carona, Calif., Janis Thomas of Orange, Calif., Andrea Basso Denheyer who, with husband Ron, lives in Irving, Texas and Frankie Basso who, with wife Heather, lives in Dallas. She was also recently blessed with two great-grandchildren, Madeleine Basso, and Jonathan Denheyer.

CB Rash, 74, died at 4:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999 at his home. Services will be held at 2 p..m. Saturday, in the First Baptist Church of Elizabethtown, with the Rev. Ed Lafferty officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery with full military services by American Legion Post 571 of Rosiclare. Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday evening at the Cox Funeral Home in Rosiclare with Masonic Rites at 7 p.m. Visitation is at the church from 12 until 2 p.m. on Saturday. Mr. Rash was born on Aug. 13, 1925, the son of Ben Toy Rash and Maude Ella (Huffsey) Rash. He was married June 28, 1947 to Mary Ellen Rash. She survives. He was retired from Ozark-Mahoney Fluorspar Mine, was a 50 year Mason, a veteran of the Air Force, and a member of American Legion Post 571. In addition to his wife Mary Ellen, he is survived by one son, Paul Wayne Rash of Ewing; one daughter, Sherry Lynn Livingston of Elizabethtown; one brother, Charles A. Rash of Eldorado; one sister, Ruby Blair of Shawneetown; three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandchild, two brothers, Clyde Rash and Hazel Rash, one sister, Nettie Dutton and his parents. Isabel V. Ratliff, 79, died at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, in Franklin Skilled Care Unit of Franklin Hospital. Mrs. Ratliff was born near Ewing, on Sept. 1, 1920, the daughter of Calvin and and Bertha (Upchurch) Tharp. She was married to Verne D. Ratliff on June 12, 1940, and he preceded her in death in 1983. She was a member of the Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Church and was a past president of the W M U. Surviving are one son, Roger and wife Shirley Ratliff of O'Fallon, Ill.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Ruth Ward and Ruby Edwards.

Ralph Ray Reeves, Jr. 36, of 101 E. Coal St., died at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, 1999 at his home, after a courageous battle with colon cancer. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Friendly Church of God, Johnston City, with the Rev. Rudy Bond officiating. Burial will be in the Harrison Cemetery, Buckner. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton. Mr. Reeves was born Sept. 25, 1962 in Elgin, the son of Ralph Ray Reeves, Sr. and Patricia (Gilbert) Reeves. He married the former Joann Kelley on Feb. 19, 1988 and she survives. He was a professional pool player and was one of the best in Southern Illinois. He was a member of the West Frankfort Moose and the Christopher Eagles. He was a member of the Friendly Church of God, Johnston City and was a devoted father. Survivors include his wife, Joann Reeves, Buckner, daughter, Raini Rae Reeves, Buckner; mother, Patricia Reeves, Christopher; a sister, Peggy Ann and husband Preston Palmer, Christopher; a brother, Jeff L. and wife Marianne Reeves, Christopher; an aunt, Barbara Reeves, Christopher; an uncle, Amos Reeves, Sesser; several double first cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, niece, Larissa Palmer, and stepfather, Gerald Swofford. Wilma Rice, 82, of 13595 Bowling Alley Road, died at 10:38 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at the Franklin Hospital, Benton. Mrs. Rice was born March 28, 1917, in Macedonia, the daughter of Frank and Kate (Lee) Payne. She married John G. Rice on Nov. 10, 1937, and he survives. She was a housewife and a member of the First United Methodist Church, Benton. Survivors include her husband, John G. The Rev. Obie Gene Rich, 71, of 1782 2nd Road, died Wednesday, September 23 1999, in his home. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. He was born on Dec. 5, 1927, the son of Obe and Cleo Rich. His wife is the former Hazel Hawkins, whom he married Nov. 19, 1953, and she survives. He was a minister for 50 years. He also served in the U.S. Air Force and was a retired miner from Freeman 34 Mine. Irene C. Robinson, 90, formerly of Colp, died at the Park Avenue Health Care, in Herrin, at 1:40 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 27, 1999. Mrs. Robinson was born on Mach 20, 1909 in Blocton, Ala., the daughter of John and Lilly Mae (Gilbert) Cagle. She was married to Lloyd Robinson Sr. He preceded her in death in 1984. She was a homemaker; a member, and a Sunday school teacher for many years at the Colp Hope Chapel United Methodist Church in Colp. Survivors include two sons, Lloyd Robinson Jr. and wife Fay, Carterville, Billie D. Robinson and wife Joyce of Hurst; six grandsons, six granddaughters, twelve great-grandsons, five great-granddaughters. Ormond Robinson, 90, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999 in his home in New Carlisle. Ormond lived and attended school in Benton. He was the Boys soloist for four years and performed in High School plays. He worked for U.S. Rubber in research and development for 32 years. He is survived by his wife and a sister, Wilma Peyla of Benton. Mary V. Rodville, 91, a former Buckner resident, died at 1:10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999 at the Franklin Skilled Care in Benton. She was born in Condove, Italy on Sept. 12, 1908, the daughter of Louis and Marietta Vanessa Bruno. On May 30, 1928, she married Stanley Rodville. He died April 17, 1966. Mary was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Benton. She is survived by: one daughter, Alberta Wood, Sun City West, Ariz.; three grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren and one sister, Jean Wisnoski, Buckner. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law Jack Wood, three brothers, Joe, Ricardo and Americo Bruno and by one sister Ernesta Schragal. He was the former owner of Bruno's Restaurant and Lounge in Sesser and also a retired employee of Rend Lake College. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and the battle of Iwo Jima. A member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sesser, he was a member of the Sesser American Legion, the V.F.W. and AMVETS of Waltonville. In addition to his wife, Edna, he is survived by two sons, Danny and Frank Romani, both of Sesser; three grandchildren, Mike, Valerie, Kendra; a sister, Ida Marzotto, South Bend, Ind.; one brother, L. D. Romani of East Alton; two nephews and three nieces, Gary and John Cavaletto, Sylvia Silkwood, Sharon Henderson, Gayla Papachriston. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Gina.

He was a journeyman mechanic and was employed by the Campbell Soup Company for 42 & 1/2 years. He was a Christian. He served his country during World War II in the South Pacific Field Artillery. In addition to his wife, Maxine, he is survived by three sons, Stephen H. and wife Ann Rowley of Plano, Texas, Bruce E. Rowley and wife Carol of Sesser, Carl R. Rowley of Tinley Park; two daughters, Janet S. Szczepanski and husband Michael of Evansville, Ind., Judy A. Peterson of Edmund, Okla.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Alta M. Walter G. Russell, 76, died at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at the Marion Memorial Hospital. Mr. Russell was born in Benton on Oct. 25, 1922, to Walter M. and Esther Acord Russell. On Nov. 20, 1951 he married Callie E. Threlkeld and she survives. Mr. Russell was a retired junior high school teacher. He was an Army veteran of WWII. Mr. Russell was a charter member and deacon of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Benton. He was also a Bible teacher at Immanuel. Mr. Russell is survived by his wife Callie E. Russell, Benton; one son, Charles Russell and wife Michelle, Fairhope, Ala.; three grandchildren, Ashley, Brandon and Brook, Fairhope, Ala. and one sister Lela Wells, Memphis, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Gladys Russell. Mr. Settle was born on Jan. 11, 1908, in Jefferson County, the son of Robert and Eliza (Knowles) Settle. He was married on June 1, 1930, in Jefferson County, to Ruby (Kelley) Settle. She survives. He was a retired farmer. The Rev.Tom W. Shepherd, 72, a former Benton resident, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999 in his home. A memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 9 a.m. Tom was born on May 5, 1927 in Benton, the son of Cecil and Letha (Wells) Shepherd. He was married to Beverly Browning on Aug. 29, 1954 in Portland, Oregon. He served in the U.S. Navy and graduated from the University of Illinois in Champaign and attended Lexington Theological Seminary in Kentucky. He was ordained in Jan. 1955. Shepherd served as minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Kentucky, West Virginia, Texas and Illinois for 41 years, 26 of those years in Dixon at the First Christian Church (DOC) where he retired in 1992. He served on the Board of Christian Churches in the Ill/WIsc. Region; Ministry Committee; General Board of Christian Church, Conference of Chuches and was a moderator of Christian Churches in the Ill. Wisc. Region. He was a member of the Dixon School Board; Tri-County Opportunity Council; Sinnissippi Mental Health Organization, Dixon Council of Churches and the Northern Ill. agency on Aging. He was also involved and concerned with many other community programs and social action issues. Lucille was a Christian. She dearly loved animals. Lucille was a member of the Concerned Women for America. A member of the Webbs Prairie Free Will Baptist Church, and she served as pianist there for several years. She was an artist and had painted several paintings and also loved to garden. He married Mary Evelyn Rice April 11, 1938, in Benton, Mo. She survives at home. He was the owner/operator of sullivan Hardwood Lumber and Pallet shop of Freeman spur. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a former member of the Zeigler American Legion Patrick McClellan Post 177. He had worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's in the Southern Illinois area. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Michael Smith of the Davis Monhan Air Force Base, Arizona; four daugthers, Tabitha Smith, McLeansboro, Helen Pass, Rushville, Ind., Susan Smith, Crownpoint, Ind. and Tammy Travelstead of Benton; one brother, Jay Smith of Pleasant Plains, Ark. and one sister, Mrs. Genevia Sills of Schererville, Ind.; three grandchildren.

Thelma E. Smothers, 82, of 1140 W. Webster, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, in La Vergna, Tenn. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton, with the Rev. Ron Griffin officiating. Burial will be in the Knight Cemetery, Buckner. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mrs. Smothers was born Sept. 21, 1917, in Buckner, the daughter of Willie and Flora (Smith) Overturf. She married Lloyd Lee Smothers and he preceded her in death on April 8, 1988. She was a homemaker and a member of the Benton Church of Christ. Survivors include a son, Lindell Smothers, La Vergne, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Staci Furgouhi, Ras Al Khama United Arab Emirates, Tim Smothers, Countryside, Missy Smothers, Smyrna, Tenn., SPC Joshua Smothers, Ft. Campbell, Ky.; five great-grandchilden; two brothers, Opal "Pete" Overturf, Baltimore, MD., Carl Overturf, Buckner; two sisters, Wanda Vleminckx, Bradford, Penn. and Ina Mae Heisner, Bisbee, Az. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, Edwin and Donald Lee Smothers and three brothers, Kenneth, Loren, and Olen "Wimp" Overturf.

DAISY E. STALCUP

Daisy E. Stalcup, 74, died at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at the Fair Acres Nursing Home in DuQuoin. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29 at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher with Brother George Marshall officiating. Burial will be in the Harrison Cemetery in Buckner. Visitation will be at the funeral home after 10 a .m. Friday until the time of service. Mrs. Stalcup was born May 3, 1925, in Sesser, the daughter of Lloyd and Delcie Clancy Smith. She was raised by her aunt Flossie Smith. She married Joel Stalcup who died in 1971. Mrs. Stalcup was a homemaker. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Christopher. Mrs. Stalcup is survived by her children, Caren Gowers, Buckner, Sharen Rowland, Mulkeytown and Roberta Urban, Christopher; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one brother Eugene Smith of Kewanee, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother, Arnold Smith and one daughter, Marian Etheal Stalcup.

Carmila ( Adams) Starets died at 8:15 a.m. Sunday, July 25, 1999 at Southern Ocean County Hospital, Manihawkin, N.J., after a brief hospitalization. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Thos. L. Shinn Funeral Home, Manihawkin, N.J., followed by Mass at St. Mary's Church, Barnegat, and burial at the Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle/ N.J. Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown, N.J. Born in Christopher on Dec. 1, 1916, she was the daughter of Emory Adams and Margaret Yates Peet, "Mila" came to Wood-Ridge, New Jersey in 1940 and married Alfred R. Starets on June 27, 1943. Moving to Kinnelon, N. J. in 1958, Camille, as many friends called her, was active with her husband Al in school and community affairs. They were members of several local bowling teams connected with Al's employer, Amerace Corp. Camille was also a faithful employee of Gabriel Roberto for many years at Robert's Green Pond Manor. Camille and Al moved to Barnega,t, N.J. in 1978 and ardently enjoyed over 20 years of shared retirement happiness. Her husband, children, grand and great-grandchildren continued to be the central focus of her life in later years. She is survived by her husband Alfred, sons Virgil, Robert and Alfred Richard, Jr.; brother Robert O. Adams in Benton; niece Frances Hall Mulvihill; nephew Ralph Peet and more than two dozen grand and great-grandchildren. Her parents, sister, Hilda Peet Hall, brothers Ralph and Willie Peet and Emory Adams, Jr. preceded her in death. Her unflagging love and dedication as a wife, mother, grandparent and friend will never be forgotten by those who knew and loved her.

MILDRED STULL

Mildred Stull, 79, died at 3:10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon. Mrs. Stull was born in Benton on July 8, 1920, the daughter of Henry and Cleo Wyant Lance. On March 16, 1936 she married Jesse Stull and he survives. Mrs. Stull was a member of the East Benton Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband Jesse of Benton; two sons, William Stull and wife Sharon, Coral Springs, Fla. and Richard Stull and wife Edith, Winchester, Va.; one daughter Phyllis Karnes, West Frankfort; six grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren; one brother Donald Lance, Sesser and three sisters, Delores Robertson, Dixon, Brenda Hayden, Dixon and Frankie of Aurora. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, at the Morton and Johnston Funeral Home with the Rev. Carroll Toler officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday to the funeral home.

Emma Sullivan, 85, formerly of Thompsonville, died at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, July 27, 1999. Services will be held Thursday, July 29, at 2 p.m. in the Sloan Funeral Home, Galatia, with Dr. James Baldwin officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 until 8 Wednesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Sullivan was born in Hamilton County on June 3, 1914, the daughter of Monroe and Dasie (Creemens) Lampley. She was married on Sept. 26, 1933 to Clifford Sullivan and her preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 1989. She sold Avon for 25 years and was a member of the Caldwell Baptist Church in Benton. Suvivors include two daughters, Lois McFarland of Thompsonville and Linda Burton of West Frankfort; one brother, Raymond Lampley of Kankakee; eight grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; three sisters, Letha Shella, Ella Hapner, Elsie Lampley, one brother Ronald Lampley.

WARNER DEAN SUMMERS

Warner Dean Summers, 64, died at his home on Friday, Nov. 5, 1999. Services were held at 3 p.m. Monday in the Johnston Funeral Home, Whittington, with the Rev. Robert Dial officiating. Burial was in the Phillips Cemetery in Ewing. Mr. Summers was born on Sept. 6, 1935 in Meeteetse, Wyoming, the son of Mathew and Geneva (Sadler) Summers. He was married on June 2, 1956 to Shirley (Hewlett) Summers. She survives. He was district manager for the Martin Oil company until his retirement. In addition to his wife Shirley, he is survived by two sons, Kenneth Summers of Thawville, Larry Dean Summers of Hinsdale; three daughters, Diana Lynn Summers of Berwyn, Gwendolyn Voss of Lombard, Paula Fay McDonald of Earlville; five grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Nicholas Summers, Valerie and David McDonald and Sheila Voss, all of northern Illinois; one brother, James Summers of Benton; one sister, Willa Hagen of Hot Springs, Ark.; several aunts.

Tommy Dean Swingle, 54, of 300 North 7th St., died in Memorial Hospital, Carbondale on Saturday, July 24, 1999. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 28, in the Gilbert Funeral Home, Christopher, with the Rev. Bert Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Mulkeytown Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. Wednesday until time of service. Mr. Swingle was born on May 15, 1954, in Christopher, the son of James and Mary (Roberts) Swingle Sr. Survivors include several brothers and sisters, James and Phyllis Swingle of Benton; Dorothy and Skip Galey of Lafayette, Ind., Roberta Staley of Mt. Carmel; Alice Davis of Three Rivers, Texas; Bennie Swingle of Christopher; Gloria Bruce of Centralia, and Rose Baudison of Benton; 30 great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one halfsister, Jackie Flowers.
