ÊJOHN PHILIPP OCHS

January 1, 1864 - January 28, 1941

John Philipp Ochs, son of Henry Ochs and his wife,Susanna, nee Ott, was born at Schoenfeld, Russia, January 1, 1864. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church of his home village and later confirmed. His boyhood was spent in his parental home. From 1884 to 1888 he served in the Russian army.

On December 26, 1889 he was married to Mary Ott at Schoenfeld, Russia. This marriage was blessed with twelve children, four of whom preceded their father in death.

On November 18, 1898, he came to America with his wife and two children. They settled in Rush county where Mr. Ochs worked as a common laborer for three years after which he was a tenant farmer near McCracken, Kansas. He took up a homestead in Kearney county, Kansas where they lived for five years after which they returned to Rush county until June 1935, when they moved to Otis.

After a short illness, Mr. Ochs died at the Baker Hospital in LaCrosse, January 28, l941, at 11:30 p.m., having attained the age of 77 years and 27 days.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife; five sons: Henry, Emmanuel, Philipp, Alexander and John; three daughters: Mrs. Maria Salisbury, Wichita, Kansas; Mrs Susie George, Ingalls, Kansas and Mrs. Elizabeth Stockwell, Craig, Missouri; twenty-three grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother Peter Ochs of Bison.

Funeral services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church, conducted by Rev. H. Raum. The body was laid to rest in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
