S.S. Pretoria
The Pretoria" was a 12,800 gross ton vessel. built in 1897 by Blohm and Voss Hamburg for the Hamburg American Line. Her deminsions were: Length 560 x beam 62 feet, one funnel, four masts, single screw and speed of 14 knots. There was accommodations for: 162 - first class, 197 - second class and 2,382 - third class (steerage). She was launched on 10 September 1897, she left Hamburg for New York City on 1 November 1898.
My Great Grandfather, John Philipp Ochs, his wife Marie and two children Marie age 6 and Henry age 6 months was on this maiden voyage. They had passage in the third class or steerage. Be sure to visit the S.S. Pretoria' Manifest of German-Russians.
