Migrated in 1854 from Dumfriesshire, Scotland to Illinois, USA via New York>Chicago>Sparland>Steuben>LaPriarie
This research, of 8 generations, was done by Agnes Burnett Blackwell, Anna Burnett Madison, Una Watt Burnett and Margaret Burnett Rowlett up to 1973 when they published History of the Burnett Family – much thanks to you all. A copy of this book may be found in the Lacon, IL Historical Society Library. Also in this library is photo's of the Burnetts; most interesting to me were Thomas McNeish and Isabella Burnett.
To protect family members, DOB and POB for those born after 1929 will not be listed. I have separated out my own members and made separate family sections under them. James Burnett was a native of Scotland and we do not have much information on him except this: We know of two wives; (1) Margot THURBURN/THORBURN who died in 1780; (c. Mary-1755, Bessie-1756, Helen-1758, Janet-1761, Isabel-1768) of which we have no information on. (2) Margot LITTLE; it is this second wife and decendant, Thomas Burnett who are part of this research; it is unknown what became of his sister's.

James son, Thomas, also a native of Scotland; b. 1794, d. 1889, both he, Isabel and many decendants are buried in the United Presbetarian Church Cemetery (UPCC) in LaPrarie, IL (which was donated farmland from unrelated John Currie) unless stated different. In Scotland he lived in Ettrick, Selkirk, Roxburgh, Inverness, Isle of Lewis, Abbotsford and was to have been an overseer of Balmoral Castle where many of his children were born. Sometime after Sprint, 1854, after the birth of their 12th child, this family immigrated to Illinois, USA via New York>Chicago>Sparland>Steuben>LaPriarie.

Adam, b. 4-26-1830 in Selkirk, Scotland and d. 10-07-1909. He married 9-1-1852 in Scotland, Jane IRVING, b. 7-18-1823 in Lockerbie, Scotlant, d. 7-26-1901. Adam and Jane came to LaPrarie, IL, USA in 1854 with his parents and family and purchased land in Ford Co, Roberts, IL. and buried in Lyman Cemetery. This Burnett line did not carry on the name.

Isabella, b. in Dumfrieshire, Scotland on 5-13-1853, d. 10-23-1925, whose family immigrated to LaPraire, IL; married 9-1-1873 in IL; Thomas McNEISH, b. 3-2-1848 in Cumbernauld, Dumbartonshire, Scotland in 1864.
Thomas had a sister, Marion, who lived in Dunkirk, NY and brother, John in Roberts, IL who died young; leaving daughter's Jeannie , adopted by J.B. LEACH; married to Wm. E. KENNEY (children: ?, one was H.E. Kenney) and Grace, adopted by Samuel J. TAPP; married Richard OSBORNE.
His father, Thomas McNeish, Sr., was a boot/shoemaker who immigrated to PA (3 years) before buying 80 acres in Ford Co.,IL. They had been Presbyterian's in Scotland and joined the United Brethren in Ford Co., IL. Thomas Sr. is buried in Benton Harbor, MI (he was living with Thomas/Isabella) and his wife, Jean buried in Roberts, IL (Lyman Cemetery).
Thomas Jr. and ‘Bell” lived in Chicago, IL (1 year)> Benton Harbor, MI (1883-1889)>Roberts, IL. He was 21 when he came to Ford Co. and farmed many years before becoming a boot/shoemaker, as his father was, until he started a harnessing business (his daughter Jeanne took on this business). Thomas married Isabella Burnett and they had nine children, were prominent citizens of Roberts. He was killed by a skyrocket when he drove a spike into it to replace a fuse. both buried at Lyman Cemetery in Roberts, IL as are some of their children unless otherwise noted.
