Guckeen History

by Randy Guckeen

The Guckeen's came to the USA in Dec 1849, aboard the Philidelphia. They Moved inland to Minnesota outside of Blue Earth.

The township of Derby was the name back then. With the railroad coming through Derby, the railroad need to have another name for the township. This was because there was already another Derby on the line. So the name of Guckeen was given to the township.

My Grandfather George Peter Guckeen, told me that some of the family that came over took on the name of Hackett and that the spelling of the last name had been changed when the family arrived. But since I was only 10 or so years old, I didn't pay much attention to him. Well, I wish I would of listened to him. I guess it is like that for all of the younger generations. I am having the same problem with my Daughter (smile).

If you have a family story, Please email me and I will be glad to post it on this page.
