John KEW born Lincolnshire England (possibly Louth) about 1824 found guilty
of a crime (unlisted) and sentenced to 7 years in 1850. Sent out to Swan River Colony
(Western Australia) on ship 'Marion' in 1851 arrived 1852. He was 28 when he arrived in
Western Australia.

Eventually obtained a 'Ticket of Leave'. Married one Elizabeth Anne Geogan. Produced 1 child
Robert John KEW, my grandfather. He married Edith Elizabeth Harrison producing one child.
Sydney John KEW, my father.

I would appreciate any information about the elder John Kew.

Shelagh Kew
Shelaghkew@aol.com

I was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the sixth child of
Norman Edward Kew (b.Halifax 6/8/1878) and
Hilda Warr Kew (b.Bornemouth, England 8/1/1899),
m. Redding, England 3/29/19.

My grandfather was John E. Kew b.1820, Isle of Man.
He apparently was a widower who immigrated to Halifax
around 1868 with a daughter Emily b.1863-64.

John's parents, as listed on the wedding certificate when he married my
grandmother, were: John (farmer) and Elizabeth Kew of the Isle of Man.
He married Margaret Ann Gerrard in 1875 (widow no children)
and they had 4 children: Norman, John, Ethel and Mable.

My second cousin, Terry Punch of Halifax is a Genealogist but has
found that John Kew is very illusive. The best he has discovered
is that there was a John Kewn(en) born to John and Elizabeth at
the Isle of Man in 1830.

Terry seems to think this is our John but I'm not so convinced -
John and Elizabeth being very common names.

The only thing that makes me hesitate is that a John McKewn(en)
had a daughter Emily the same age as our John's daughter.
Also, I have a photo of John taken probably during the early years
in Halifax which show him as a middle aged man with a full dark
beard and dark hair that may have a little grey in it which doesn't
indicate 60+ years.

However, my father and aunt both told me that he was born in
1820. It seems unlikely that anyone would age themselves 10 years
unless they were hiding or wanted to be exempt from some kind of
military duty.

Since my grandmother was so much younger one would expect
him to want to narrow the gap instead of increase it.

Additionally, to change the name from Kewn(en) to Kew is not
much of a stretch unless it was to give more of an English
appearance since the Irsh were not too popular at that time.

My father believed that his father left a "grown family" in
Liverpool when he immigrated.

This might indicate that he raised his family in Liverpool.
If he was born in 1820 he would have been 58 years old at that
time and quite possibly a grandfather.

Grandfather also had a daughter of tender years which might
point to a second marriage. Because I was only 21 when my father
passed away I was unable to pose the questions that I have today.
I only remember the occasional remark regarding his father but I
am very definite on what I do remember.

Grandfather John apparently had a grocery store in Halifax at one
time and later operated a successful bakery which is still operating
today as Moir's Bakery, the company who bought it from him. he
died in Halifax in 1904.

My aunts, Ethel (m. Henry Little) and Mable (m.John McInnis) had
10 and 9 children respectively, although Mable lost 4 or 5 of her
children in childhood.

Along with my family and the generations that have followed the
Kew kinship has spread out, though the only ones known by the
name of Kew are my family.

My brother Norman has two sons and two grandsons, but they are
the only ones who carry on the Kew name in our branch of the family.

I have a feeling that the way to narrow down my search would be
to find the decendants of John Kew's first family, left behind in
Liverpool or possibly the Isle of Man. I have no idea how many
children there were or their names but my father believed it
sufficiently to search for them when he was in England during
WW1 (with no success, I might add, which is not surprising since
50 years had elapsed).

There appear to be a number of Kews searching for family links
on the Isle of Man website but the census searches my cousin
Terry has made have not found any and I did not see anything on
the site that seemed recognizable.
However, I did post the information about my grandfather.

Does anyone out there recognize a connection? Wes - thank you
for posting this website. What a great idea!

Hi.I am contacting you from New Zealand..My grandfather's name was
Thomas Kew Harty. We have managed to find a William Henry Harty
(still to be proved, my grandfather's oldest brother)who married
Anne KEW, June 28, 1847, at St Pancras Church..In presence of
Henry Kew and Sarah Kew. father of ANNE=Henry KEW(dead),MUSIC MASTER.

Of note, she had had a daughter Anne born in Southwark, St George
the Martin Workhouse in April, 1847..father sited as William Harty.
sad Huh? suppose it happened all the time !!!)
At least he married her 2 months later !!

There are 7 other persons, =2 females and 5 men( have details!) of
apparently unrelated names, widowers, unmarried, and married, living
also at this address...was this a boardinghouse?....

Following the birth of William Harty, 1847(= mother Anne Kew) there
were 3 sons born, ( after 1852), each having Kew as a second christian
name.I can find no record of them being born in England. These 3 males
immigrated to NZ in 1870+ (Thomas Kew Harty being my grandfather)..
we understood the Harty family came from Cork, Ireland,( and they
were educated there!) that they were Quakers, and also some branch
(was it Harty or Kew? ) were originally Heugenots.

Of significance from the above details, it emerges that there were
three generations of MUSIC SMITHs in the KEW family

I searched the Net, but I am sure you too, are well aware Kew, Music,
Smith are all very common words..so no luck there!. Can you help???
I know there are some family KEW in New Zealand but so far I have been
unable to find any connection to my lot...
...Best regards. Patricia, Auckland NZ..

I am researching the KEW line. My G.Grandfather William Kew born abt: 1885
Married Edith Brett 28 Jan 1906 at the Church of St Matthews, Marylebone, London, England.
He died 18th Aug 1939 in North Kensington. He had 10 children.
(Edith's parents were Robert Brett and Sarah Smith born around 1850 in Suffolk.)
His father was David Benjamin Kew born abt: 1862.
David married Emma Eliza Aves on 11th June 1884 in Marylebone.
They had three sons.William, Walter and Albert.
We think Albert married a lady called Alice. David was a master boot and shoe repairer.
Emma, his wife, was the daughter of Albert Augustus Aves and Eliza King.
They married 1854 in Marylebone.
David's father was also called David Benjamin Kew.

Good afternoon, I have just discovered this website. I am Ronald Kew born in 1932.
I have been able to trace my direct family back to c 1740/50. John kew married Susannah Turnil in 1776. They lived in Northborough, Northants England. He was a stonemason(confirmed by an entry in the Manrial records in 1786. The family continued to live in that area for nearly 200 years, there has always been a John in the family my younger brother who died 7 years ago was John, the old family were farmers of some standing and their history of land and property dealing is well documented in ancient records.
My grandfather was Captain Henry James Kew who lived in Grimsby. He was blown up by a mine in the North sea at the end of the 1st WW, he was in the Mercantile Marine.
I have extensive records some very old, and I am always willing to share info with anyone who thinks they are related to my family.
There is also a Coat of Arms documented, the old spellings of KEW are Cue, Cew Kewe.
Ronald Kew. with kind regards to all members of the extended KEW FAMILY
