First Generation

1. Adam1 Butner(1) birth date unknown. Adam died before 1777 at age unknown.

He married (Mrs. Adam) (Butner) date unknown. (Mrs. was born circa 1710. (Mrs. died date unknown at age unknown.

He came from Europe, probably in the 1730s, on the ship "Robert and Alice." Sometime thereafter, he settled near the village of Graceham, in the part of Prince Georges County, Maryland, that in 1744 became Frederick County.

The 1761 marriage license of Thomas Butner bears the signatures of two men named Adam Butner. The 1763 deed refers to "Adam Butner, Sr." Later records in the 1770s refer simply to "Adam Butner;" it may be inferred that the elder had passed on, and there was no longer a need to distinguish between the two.

Adam Butner and (Mrs. Adam) (Butner) had the following children:

$+ 2 i. James2 Butner was born circa 1729.

On January 22, 1774, the regular Baptist Church of Rowan County met at the Mulberry Field, near the forks of the Yadkin River, and baptised eight persons, including Peter Butner. On August 7 of the same year, he was listed as a member of the church. On September 17, the church, meeting at Boone's Ford, received into membership by baptism one Adam Butner, and by letter, Jemima Merrill, who later married Harmon Butner. The relationship of this Adam and of Harmon to Peter Butner hasn't been discovered.

$14 xiii. Andrew Butner was born circa 1750. Andrew died July 1784 at age 34. Parents are purely speculative. Birth date guessed as about 21 years before court claim in 1772.

$15 xiv. Jesse Butner(4) was born circa 1758. Jesse died date unknown at age unknown. His parents are pure speculation. At the Rowan County Court on May 7, 1783, he was appointed overseer of a road from Dutchmans Creek to Shallow Ford.

Second Generation

2. James2 Butner (Adam1) was born circa 1729. James died 1788 at age 59.

Mentioned as the father of the orphaned Edward, q.v., who was 12 in 1789. Mentioned as testifying to grand juryin Frederick Co. MD in Aug. 1750 about theft of a horse from Adam Butner. From this event are speculated parents, and birth date 21 years before.

James Butner had the following child:

$16 i. Edward3 Butner of Rowan Co. was born August 1777. Edward died date unknown at age unknown. He married Polly Parks November 17, 1802. Polly was born circa 1780. Polly died date unknown at age unknown. Mrs. Stahle Linn's "Abstracts of Minutes of Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, Rowan Co. NC 1775-1789 Vol. III" p.191 mentions Edward Butner, 11 yrs.9 mos., orphan of James Butner decd, bound to Philip Hendricks until 21 to learn trade as shoemaker & be given 20 pounds at expiration of his time. It is purely speculative to connect this birth information and the marriage to Polly Parks, but he is the only Edward known in NC.

7. Adam2 Butner Jr. (Adam1)(5) birth date unknown. Adam died circa 1788 at age unknown.

He married Hannah (Butner) (Kidwell) before 1773. Hannah was born circa 1740. (Additional notes for Hannah (Butner) (Kidwell)(6)) Hannah died date unknown at age unknown.

On August 5, 1788, Elijah Kidwell was ordered to bring to the Rowan County Court "Mary Butner Orphan of Adam Butner decd." The next day, the court recorded that, "Hannah Kidwell is 50 pounds in debt with Thos. Biles & Dosey Rounseval Securities to Maintain & educate Mary & Sarah Butner".

A relationship between Hannah and Mary and Sarah may be presumed; the most likely is that Hannah is their mother, and thus the widow of Adam Butner. His birth date is speculated, based on the supposition that he would be the eldest son. Mrs. Lena Boman Jones, in her book, takes his existance for granted. She gives a picture of Thomas Butner's marriage bond, attibuting the second signature to Thomas's brother Adam. It appears that the third signature is father Adam. Father Adam's deed of 1763 refers to him as Adam Sr., implying the existence of a Junior. The present author has chosen to assign all subsequent mention of the name without Sr. or Jr. to this younger man.

Young Adam may have lost the land he might have inherited from his father by confiscation because of service in the Loyalist militia. His name appears, marked "missing", on a muster roll of Captain N. N. Hunter's Company of North Carolina Volunteers, held as prisoners of war at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on April 23, 1782. This company was probably among the forces surrendered in Lord Cornwallis' British army at Yorktown, Virginia, on October 19, 1781. At the time of the muster, only one ensign and one private were present; thirty nine privates and Lieutenant Thomas Blayer were reported missing. The surgeon, Thomas Schmidt, had been left sick at Fredericksburg. Captain Hunter was listed as "dead at Gloucester."

Adam Butner Jr. and Hannah (Butner) (Kidwell) had the following children:

$17 i. David3 Butner was born circa 1773. David died date unknown at age unknown.

In the newsletter of The Genealogical Society of Rowan Co. NC, Vol.2 No.2, June 1988, p.34, an article titled "The Arts and Crafts in North Carolina" by James H. Craig cites unspecified Rowan Co. Court Records : "John Hill takes David Butner, orphan of Adam Butner, as apprentice for 4 years, to the spinning wheelmaker's trade. 8 May 1890." The year may be presumed to be a typo for 1790, as the entry is appropriately positioned in a chronologically ordered list of events from 1777 to 1795. It hasn't been determined whether this refers to the John Hill who married Rachel, the daughter of Thomas Butner.

The will of Herman Butner, Rowan County Book D, page 160, May 11, 1795 mentions "David Butner, son of Adam Butner dec."

$18 ii. Sarah Butner(7) was born circa 1775. Sarah died date unknown at age unknown.

$19 iii. Mary Butner(8) was born circa 1775. Mary died date unknown at age unknown.

In 1759, during the French and Indian War, he served as a private in Captain Aventon Phelps' Scouts, which had been ordered by Colonel George Smith to range the frontier.

In 1765, he bought 220 acres in Rowan County. His will, dated May 11, 1795, mentioned his nephew David Butner, son of Adam Butner deceased, and his grandson, Herman Walton. His daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Benjamin Walton, were named executors.

She had marriage banns published June 22, 1818 in Madison Co, KY.(54) The evidence that Nancy Butner of Sullivan County, Indiana, is the widow of Edward Butner is strong: the 1840 Indiana census ages of daughters match the 1830 Kentucky census and the will; in the 1850 Indiana census she resides next to Bluford Arnett and his wife Jennett, she of appropriate age to match Ginnetta of the will. The only loose ends are the boys, one age 5-9 in each of the 1830 and 1840 censuses. He of 1830 was not in the will; he of 1840 might be Edward's posthumous child.

He married Catherine (Jane) Foster March 24, 1846 in Madison Co, KY.(103) Catherine was born circa 1829 in Madison Co, KY. Catherine died date unknown at age unknown. However, no marriage of another Butner to Jane Foster is recorded, and Kizziah's age is right for the marriage date. Could it be that Jane is a 2nd wife from MO, keeping John Foster's grandchildren Kizziah and Adam?

William was employed date unknown. William had marriage banns to an unknown person published February 10, 1821 in Madison Co, KY.(104) The parents of this man are guessed because he named his children Adam & Kizziah.
