La Société de Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux or 40 & 8 takes its name from the French boxcars of World War I that transported forty men or eight horses. Founded in 1920, the 40 & 8 is composed of invited men who have proven to be outstanding American Legionnaires. Voyageurs (members) undergo rigorous initiations called wrecks to demonstrate their worthiness to be numbered among only about 50,000 worldwide.

Voiture 974 has voyageurs from a number of Legion Posts in the Carolina Lowcountry. About a dozen are members of C. Q. Williams Post 179. The voyageurs and les Dames of la Cabane are continually involved in a variety of charitable and patriotic activities in the community.
