Of My Best Friend

Gretchen Sue Wells was my best friend. We grew up next door to each other and "adopted" each other as sisters, since neither one of us had a sister. I was older, so I tried to take care of her & she looked up to me for guidance as sisters do.

Above is a picture of Gretchen, dressed for her first prom. I had taken her shopping for her first prom dress. Afterward we went out for burger & fries & sang along with the car radio, singing our favorite songs that were on the air at that time. Then I took her home. It was the last time I saw her. It's a moment that I will cherish forever, as will I cherish all the moments that we shared.

Gretchen died on June 5, 1997 at the age of 20 years old. She was killed in a fireworks warehouse explosion in LaFollette, Tennessee, shortly after 12:00 p.m., along with three others. The cause is still undetermined & leaves many questions for all of us left behind. Her parents are Jerry & Anita, her brother, Wesley, and George Brown her Granddaddy & Grant Wells her Papaw. Plus many other relatives, & scores of friends.

Please read Stream of Friends Share Family's Grief, a story from the local newspaper in LaFollette, Tennessee, about the services held for Gretchen.
