Newport
Tilley Avenue street signIn 1996, several Tilley familes spent a week in Rhode Island, and one day Mert & I (Holly) were bicycling in Newport and went to Tilley Ave, where Grampa Milton grew up, and where the Tilley's had lived for several generations. It was farmland then.
House at 2 Tilley AvenueThis is 2 Tilley Ave. I need someone to fill me in on exactly who lived here. In 1996, Roland Chase and his wife Ruthann lived there. Roland's father and grandfather were both named John Chase, and Herbert Charles Tilley's sister Edna married John Chase, Sr. Edna lived at 2 Tilley Ave. She taught at Coggeshall School, where Roland and his children went to school. Roland has old photos of the house, and of Abraham Henry and other family members. He has a brother in Middletown who is very interested in genealogy. His brother owns and operates the greenhouse which is just behind 2 Tilley Ave.
House at 1 Tilley AvenueThis is 1 Tilley Ave. Herbert Charles and Nevada Brown lived here for the last 20 or so years of their lives. In the Depression, when Grampa had to come back east, he took his family here for several months. Mom remembers the old-fashioned bathroom with the toilet with the overhead water reservoir that flushed with a long cord. This photo is looking west and you can barely see part of the porch and the dormer of 2 Tilley Ave. behind it. This is in the midst of a working class neighborhood.
House at 9 Tilley Avenue9 Tilley Ave. A few houses further on down the block, this is now apartments, and has a historical plaque which says Abraham H. Tilley, c.1874. It needs paint, has seen better days.
9 Tilley Avenue PlaqueBelow: Roland and Ruthann Chase, 7/96. They happened to see us taking a photo and invited us in. Once it become evident that we were related, Roland brought out some of his old pictures, photos of Abraham Dennis and his children working outside, and old photos of the house and the area. They had done quite a bit of remodeling to the house and it is very attractive and pleasant.
