The Burdett Bugle
VERY EARLY EDITION - DECEMBER 25, 2001
The Burdett Bugle - Omaha, Nebraska, Volume 9, Issue 1 (Our ninth year)
Motto: All the news that's fit to toot.
Wow - another eventful year is coming to a close already! We hope that your year has been as blessed as ours has been. The year started off great with the birth of another grandchild on January 4th. Jayson Watts, pictured with Grandma Terry and his father, has already brought a lot of joy to the world.
We expect to be on the road again this holiday season. Bob and Terry will fly off to Las Vegas on Christmas Eve to spend some time with Bob's father, sister and other family members. Matt will fly off to Hawaii one day later to vacation with his girlfriend Alestin, her parents and some of their relatives on Maui. We are all scheduled to return to Omaha on January 4th, 2002.
GOOD-BYE-YA
PEOPLE IN THE NEWS
Avaya Inc. gave Bob a retirement offer he couldn't (or at least didn't) refuse and effective December 1, 2001, Bob joined the ranks of the unemployed-retired. Bob spent 31 years working a number of "quality" jobs for Western Electric, AT&T, Lucent and Avaya. He is currently hanging around the house working on some long-deferred projects.
Bob is pictured at his Avaya "exit ceremony". One member of management is shown placing a hand on Bob's head to suck out any remaining job knowledge, while another individual is shown trying to remove his facial hair.
Bob is also pictured with his new grandson. They get along pretty good until a diaper change is required.
Speaking of birthdays, Terry celebrated the "big 50" this past summer. She is pictured at the open house held in her honor. She has aged well. Terry has been as busy as ever with her part-time-part-time job at Hallmark and her full-time-part-time job at Trinity church. She is also enrolled in a Japanese language class at a local college, continues to work with the young girls at her church and even took some golf lessons during the year. Grass will never grow under her feet or her nine iron.
Matt Burdett graduated from Omaha Burke High School during commencement activities held on May 23, 2001. He is pictured with his sister Lisa and his mother.
Matt continues to enjoy sports, especially Nebraska football, and Creighton basketball. He keeps fit by running and lifting weights and played quite a bit of golf over the summer. Matt also enjoys listening to music. He and a friend recently attended a Weezer concert in Kansas City.
Matt, pictured with Alestin before the prom, is completing his first semester at Creighton University (Pre-Pharmacy). Matt commutes daily to the downtown campus and he continues to work part time as a cashier at the Nebraska Furniture Mart. He and Alestin also tutor students at the Hope Center.
TRAVEL
The Burdetts did some traveling during 2001.
Bob and Terry again drove down to St. Louis in March to cheer on the Creighton basketball team during Arch Madness. The Bluejays didn't win the tournament but their record was strong enough to get them invited to the NCAA tournament for the third year in a row.
In May (sometime between Matt's graduation party and his graduation), Bob and Terry spent a few days in Las Vegas with Grandpa Burdett and the Schusters.
Jayden joined Bob and Terry for a day trip to Adventureland Park in Des Moines, Iowa. They got pretty
wet going down the Raging River and River Rapids.Bob and Terry also celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary at a
B&B in Atlantic, Iowa. Jayden did not make this September trip. The big trip of the year came in October when Bob and Terry flew down to Florida to visit Mark and Vanessa at
Eglin AFB. They actually flew into Jacksonville and spent some time at the World Golf Village, in St. Augustine, at the Kennedy Space Center and in Orlando (Epcot) before driving up the gulf coast to Eglin AFB. After 9/11, the security at the airports and airbase was pretty tight but it didn't dampen their fun. While at Eglin, they took some side trips to Pensacola, Destin and Seaside and the beautiful white-sand beaches that the Florida gulf coast is famous for. Bob loved the water. They both enjoyed their visit with Mark and Vanessa.2001 Omaha Visitors
Vanessa (top center in this four-generation picture) made it back to Omaha during May for Matt's graduation party.
This bonus picture (for the electronic version of the Bugle only) shows four generations of the guys. From left to right are Jay, Jayson, Bob, Matt and Mike.
Bob's cousins, Barbara Moe and Donnelle Gearheart visited Bob and Terry during March. They drove in from Utah for the opening of the new Winter Quarters Nebraska Temple. Both Barbara and Donnelle worked on the temple's beautiful stained glass windows.
