All the news that’s fit to toot!

Very Early Edition - December 25, 2005 - Volume 13, Issue 1 (Our thirteenth year)

We hope and pray that you all have a blessed Christmas.

We will be spending the holidays in Omaha again this year. Terry had bunions fixed on both of her feet (same time) this summer so we hung around the house a bit more than normal this year. We did make it out to Oregon around Mother's Day to visit Terry's Aunt Marie and Terry's cousins Tony and Tom Shiroyama. The pictures below show us with Aunt Marie on a stern-wheeler in the middle of the Columbia River; and at the Portland Classical Chinese Garden. Aunt Marie kept us hopping while we were in Oregon. We enjoyed the coast from Newport to Astoria.

During 2006 we plan to pick up on our traveling a bit -- to Washington DC and Philadelphia in March for Dr. Michael Schuster's wedding and to Estes Park, Colorado in August for the wedding of Stacey Oshima.

Terry Gussies Up for Deborah Group Lunch

Terry continues to work part time at Trinity Church. She also coordinates the church's senior citizen (65+) "Keenager" group. This involves planning a lot of lunches and outings for the group (e.g., Christmas party yesterday, Christmas Carol play next weekend).

Terry also helps lead one of the church's Deborah groups (ladies ministry) and works with the 4th grade girl's AWANA classes. Her bunion surgery slowed her down a bit but her new Z-Coil shoes have her springing around again. She continues to crochet scarves and sew blankets for various acquaintances. For kicks, it's games on the laptop computer, CSI cases on TV, and cheering for the Creighton Bluejay basketball teams.

Bob Bikes, Bibles, and Bangs the Ball

Bob continued to be classified as retired and unemployed this past year. He did serve as Terry's practical nurse for awhile after her surgery. A transport wheelchair allowed both of them to move about the town.

Matt got his father involved in bicycle riding this past year. They took one 40-mile jaunt and a lot of 20-mile trips to, from, and around Lake Zorinsky and down the Wabash Trace Nature Trail over in Iowa.

Bob has also completed three more units (another thirty weeks) of The Denver Catholic Biblical School Program (Paul's letters, John, Revelation, pre-exile prophets). The 8th (of 12) units has just begun (post-exile prophets).

Bob still plays tennis (2 leagues and is a charter member of the Omaha Clay Court Association). He also recently started to volunteer at the Holy Family Shrine.

People In the News

The whole family is pictured on March 14, 2005.

Vanessa Kramis (sitting next to Matt) moved to Tampa FL during 2005. Vanessa was recently promoted to the position of Senior Sales Representative at GSK (GlaxoSmithKline).

Lisa Watts continues to work for an Omaha podiatrist. Parenting, work, and friends keep her busy.

Matt Burdett is a third-year pharmacy student at Creighton University in Omaha. He is very busy with his own schooling and the tutoring of others. Next semester will be his last in the classroom. Starting in June, Matt will be doing eight five-week pharmacy rotations

The order and locations of these clerkships have not been established yet.

Matt continues to work part time at the Nebraska Furniture Mart and at a local pharmacy. Matthew enjoys watching sports (e.g., UNL football) and bicycling. Matt is pictured in front of our Christmas Tree with Charlene, a friend and fellow CU pharmacy student from Honolulu, Hawaii.

Burdett Bugle Online Bonus: Matt is pictured on his "speed" bike.

Jayden Watts is a fifth grader at Harvey Oaks School. For fun, she plays volleyball and the flute. Her favorite TV channel is (get this) The Food Channel.

Jayson Watts is a healthy four-year old. He enjoys mixing it up with most everyone and playing soccer. He understands that you can't touch the ball with your hands - but that doesn't mean you can't use your hands.

In Memoriam

Kazuji "Mike" Oshima

Born: September 1, 1918 in San Pedro, California

Died: March 10, 2005 in Omaha, Nebraska

Kazuji (Mike) Oshima, age 86 years, a long time resident of Boys Town and Omaha, NE died on March 10, 2005. One sister, two sons, two daughters, ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mitzi (7-20-04).

Mike was born and raised in San Pedro, California. He was working on his father's fishing boat when World War II started. He was relocated to the Manzanar CA "Relocation Center" shortly thereafter with the rest of his family. In 1944, Father Flanagen offered Mike a job in the Boys Town carpentry shop. Mike retired from that position in 1998. During his years at Boys Town, Mike served on both the Boys Town village board and the Boys Town volunteer fire department.

Mike loved everything associated with fishing. Over the years, he fixed countless fishing poles, tied many thousands of flies, and caught his share of the "big ones".

Mike is pictured with Father Flanagen. The picture was taken 60 years ago, in 1945, on Christmas Day.

Bob is a fan of the Discovery Channel TV show -- American Chopper. This "reality" series documents how the crew at Orange County Choppers builds custom motorcycles. Bob thinks that he resembles (e.g., muscular build, moustache, tank top wardrobe) the owner of the shop -- "Paul senior." You can judge for yourselves. Which of these pictures is Bob? Hint: One of the pictures was electronically doctored a bit. Kelly of "Regis and Kelly" fame may have been electronically added to Picture #2.
