How to Send Stuff to the Leclair Web Site
-Email, attachments, guestbook, etc.

What you send is what you get !

Since the whole idea of this site is to share information about Leclair family stuff, you have to send in your stuff to make it work.

What Stuff?

Almost anything you don't mind having on public display (see our Guidelines below ) including:

• descriptions of recent activities of family members, family get-togethers, vacations, projects, plans
• historical information on the Leclair family, life in Holtyre & Timmins, family tree info, the old blueberry stories etc. See our History page for some ideas.
• pictures are always great. If you have scanned pictures that you don't mind being publicly displayed, and can attach them to an Email, I'll find a way to get them on the site. If you're not familiar with getting pictures scanned, I have 2 suggestions:
  1. find a friend with a scanner who will scan them for you (and maybe even Email them to me)
  2. get your film developed at Black's Photography, and for an extra $5 per roll, they'll scan them and put them on their secure website for you. They'll want an Email address to send notification and a password, and you can download and select the pictures. If that sounds too complicated, you can just forward me the notice and I'll get them for you.
• web links to sites that would be of interest to the Leclairs.
• anything else that comes to mind that you'd like to share
  

Guidelines on what can/should appear on the Leclair website

There are a couple of things to think about before you put information up on a website.

First of all there are the rules of the company that is providing the webspace, in our case, Geocities. Their set of rules is pretty straight forward, and prohibits things like profanity, racism, commercialism, and spam. One thing you might not think of is that they don't allow any sort of password controls, so that everything on this site is visible to every web surfer in the world. You should never put anything here that you wouldn't want displayed on a billboard downtown.

Secondly, we have to be aware that there are some sick people out there who use information from websites to find and bother other people, particularly children. Geocities has a fairly strong recommendation (section 12 in the above set of rules), and opinions vary as to how careful you need to be. I would suggest that this site should never contain telephone numbers or home street addresses for anyone. I think we can safely mention our children's first names, and the cities we live in.

Lastly, I'd caution you to be careful about how you write about other people. Since this is a very public display, I would avoid intentionally saying anything nasty about anyone (except maybe politicians {grin}). Even when you're not trying to be nasty, it's very easy to be misinterpreted. People reading your words can't see your facial expressions or hear your voice as they can in conversations. In particular when you write something that you intend to be funny, other readers may not take it that way. I've been burned by this several times in Email messages. So be careful, and when in doubt, give hints like the {grin} I used above, or "emoticons" like the smiley  :-)    or winky   ;-).

If you want to pass on information that maybe shouldn't be on a public website, Email is a better way. (There are certain things I would never put in an Internet Email, too, such as a credit card number, but I'll quit sermonizing {grin} )

The guidelines we follow for this site are certainly up for discussion, but I hope this is a useful starting point

As for what information  and topics are of interest, that's up to you. I've included some ideas above, but the more creative you are, the better.

How to Send Stuff to the Leclair Web Site

1. Figure out what stuff you want to send in. (There are some starting points above)
2. Make sure it fits in with our guidelines above.
3. If your info is really short (like about 2 sentences) you can leave it as a note when you sign our guestbook from the home page
4. In most cases it's best to Email it to me. A simple way is to click here, which will open up an Email message that's preaddressed. You can include your information in several ways:
   
   • just type it in to the body of the message
   • if it's already in some displayable format, cut and paste it into the body of the mail message

   • if it's a computer file, such as a picture, add it to the mail message as an attachment

   If you run into problems, Email me, and I'll do what I can to help you. If you're having trouble sending Email from your web browser, and prefer to use another mail program, you can use it to reach me at the Email address lesleclair@geocities.com  or  doug.elliott@londonlife.com
