Notes: records show that his mother died shortly after childbirth and that in 1905 he was adopted by his grandparents.
According to family tradition, his father died when he was 2, which would have been 1897. we are unable to find any record of him other than 3 references. (Click on his name above.) He was apparently not given a middle name at birth and later took the name Demerest after a lawyer in Elkhart Indiana named Melvin U. Demerest who seems to have been a family friend and his guardian after his grandfather died in 1907. Perhaps he was his grandmother's guardian also. (She died in 1915 in Elkhart)
