How to Grow African Violet Seeds

Supplies

  • African Violet Seeds
  • Covered Container: 4 1/2 inch pot, 4 X 4 Square container, 3 X 5 rectangular container. The above suggestions I got out of several African violet books I have read. A small container will result in crowded conditions. My second batch of seeds where planted in a divided Tupperware bowl with a clear lid. Don't forget to poke drain holes in your container for drainage. A plastic bag or saran wrap will work as a cover for your seedling.
  • Compost: Very light and fine peat based compost. I used two Jiffy 7 pellets moistened than crumbled into my container.

Directions for sowing your seeds

  1. Add 1 to 3 inches of compost to your container, do not pack. Water your container from the bottom and allow to drain well. You do not want mud, your soil should be just moist. If using the Jiffy 7 pellets soak them in a bowl of water for about 20 minutes than crumble into your container.
  2. African violet seeds are very fine and require careful handling (Turn off your fan & air or heater). Cut a piece of white paper about a 4 X 4 square and fold in half. Open your folded paper and very carefully dump your seeds on top, than very carefully tap your seeds onto your compost. Your seeds need light to germinate DO NOT cover your seeds with soil.
  3. Cover your seed container with a clear cover or saran wrap or place in a sealed bag. Your seedling need to be kept warm 65 F - 75 F (17 C - 24 C) and will need light to germinate. Place your seeds in a shaded window or under your lights 9 to 12 inches from the tubes. Direct sunlight is to be avoided as well as cold window sills.

Germination will be in 14 day with the proper environment but can take up to 3 months or longer.
