Volumes 1 & 2 of "Missing! From the 1881 British Census: British and non-British crewmen arriving at Sydney 1 January - 30 June 1881" are now available.

Volume 1 covers 1 January to 31 March 1881 and is compiled from the crewlists of ships docking at Sydney, Australia during this period. In general, the crewlists give the name of the seaman, his age or year of birth, and his shipboard occupation. They will also state his place of origin, which might be a city (eg Manchester), a county, or a country (eg Scotland). It is possible therefore to 'catch' individuals who might have been expected to appear on the 1881 British census, but who did not because they were halfway round the world at the time the census was taken! Volume 2 covers crew arrivals for 1 April to 30 June 1881.

The books consist of 60 A4 pages with around 9000 entries equating to approximately 6000 individuals. They cost £3.50 plus £1.00 postage & packing from Keith Giles, Rowan Cottage, Wester Craigie, Whitecairns, Aberdeen AB23 8XE, Scotland. Cheques should be in sterling & made  payable to "Keith R Giles". Alternatively if you are willing to risk cash to the post, I can accept AU$10 (from Australia) or US$7 (from USA or Canada), which should be sufficient to cover conversion costs and postage .

So, if you've been puzzling over the whereabouts of Lovelace Harry Andrew BULL (b. 1865), or why 24 year-old Nathaniel MANHOOD was not in London in 1881, or even what part of Ireland James ST CLAIR came from, this book is for you!
