The Children of Henshall Cockitt

James Rathbone Cockitt 1841-1870

As Henshall Cockitt's eldest son James might well have been expected to take over the family farm in Gawsworth. In 1861 however he was working as a cornsalesman in Manchester. He married Jane JACKSON at Manchester Cathedral on 18 January 1862 and was in Chicago USA by 1866 (taking the name James RATHBONE) where sons Edward and Clarence were born. He died in June 1870. His wife "Jane RATHBONE" is listed in the Chicago City Directory for 1872 and 1873. She could be the Mrs Jane Rathbone who married an Emanuel Baxter in Cook County (Chicago) on 18 September 1873.

When Esther Ann COCKITT married John THORNLEY at St Lukes, Cheetham Hill, Manchester in 1869 she was working as a shop assistant for Joseph THOMPSTONE, who came from her home village of Gawsworth.

John THORNLEY was living with his brother-in-law James Rathbone COCKITT in Chicago in June 1870, and Esther Ann probably arrived soon after. Their first son John was born in Chicago around 1871. The Thornleys had returned to England by 1891, when John Thornley was manager of "The Crescent Inn", Broadbottom, Cheshire, a pub owned by Sarah Jane MATLEY. Where did they go after 1891?

Olive Augusta Cockitt 1847-1897

Olive Augusta COCKITT married Thomas Boothby FOWLER at Chorlton-on-Medlock in March 1870. They had two children Lizzie Ann Boothby (later MUIR) (b.1870) and Henshall (b.1872). Olive Augusta worked as a lady's maid for Sarah Jane MATLEY of "The Hodge", Broadbottom, and claimed to be a widow in 1891. But what happened to Thomas Boothby FOWLER?

Charles married Elizabeth YEATES at Prestbury on 20 July 1874. He initially farmed at High Lane, Gawsworth, before taking over Brookhouse Farm on his father's death in 1883. He was the only one of Henshall's four children not to travel the world. Born in Gawsworth, he died 2 miles away in Macclesfield.
