THE STORIES OF OUR JEWELS

...from the beginning

Our family began in 1975 with our marriage.  In 1977 our first daughter was born, and in 1980 we had a son.  Perfect... A boy and a girl. We are done. (right!) In 1984 another boy was born.  Now we are really done!  This is a big family. (rightwink!)   Then in 1990, another boy was born. Of course we are really, really done.  This is a very big family. (right! major wink!) Then a sad thing happened; we had a fifth pregnancy, and part way through the pregnancy the baby died.  Now we all felt that we were missing a baby. Our family was too small; one was missing.  Soon another baby girl was born to our family, but the seedling of love for children had been planted.  So began our adoptions.

Adoption Number One

Bethany was born with a cleft lip and palate in an outer province of Cambodia.  She was brought to the Nutrition Center Orphanage in Phnom Penh at the age of three weeks, weighing three pounds.  She was nearly dead from starvation.  When she was two years old, we adopted her privately, using a facilitator Paul met in Cambodia.  Paul calls her "our jewel from the East".  Bethany is 21 days younger than our last biological child, Mercy.  They were both born in the fall of 1993 and are not only sisters, but the very best of friends. Click here to see a photo of these best buddies.

      and that was the beginning...
