Location and Terrain

As the hub of the three surrounding parks, Barham Ranch provides critical wildlife paths.  This linkage allows access among the parks for park visitors, as well as a diversity of ranging animals.

Largely steep and rugged, these 526 acres are covered with spectacular native vegetation including several  hundred-year-old  majestic coast  live oaks, coastal sage and native wildflowers. A complete native plant community including toyon, lemonade berry, chamise, numerous varieties of sage, sugarbush, laurel sumac, yucca, prickly pear and others are found on Barham Ranch.  The willow woodland habitat has been identified as the most extensive in all of Orange County.

It is a delightful birding spot, home of species ranging from the water-loving Great Blue Herons and Egrets to the numerous hawks and owls.  Tree-dwelling Acorn Woodpecker, the endangered California gnat catcher, Bells Vireo and Cactus Wren are also found.

Barham Ranch can only be entered by riding, hiking or biking through one of the surrounding three parks.  Any development effort would demand an access road be slashed through one of the regional parks.

Such a road and development would disrupt the natural environment, create hazards and endanger the safety of wildlife and park visitors.  This destruction of park property and habitat would be a misuse of public lands
