Novena Page

A Novena is nine days of public or private prayer for some special occasion or intention.  It's origin is from the nine days that the disciples and Mary spent together in prayer, between Ascension and Pentecost Sunday.  These prayers are wonderful ways to prepare our hearts, especially for special feast days, such as Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter.

To make a Novena means to persevere in prayer, asking fo some favour, over period of nine consecutive days or weeks.  By praying a Novena, we are fulfilling our Lord's teaching that we must pray constantly, and never lose confidence. We are encouraged to pray until we receive an answer in Luke 11: 9-10.  "Ask and you shall receive; seek and you shall find; knock and the door shall be opened to you.  For whoever asks, receives; whoever seeks, finds; whoever knocks is admitted".

Novenas are prayers said to God, Our Lady, and the Saints.  Novenas are prayers said to obtain favours from God, and also encourage people to pray frequently, because prayer is a rich source of God's grace.  There are Noveas of prayer for the various periods of the Liturgical Year, as well as the various Seasons and Feasts of the Church Year.

Novena for the Nine Days Preceeding the 25th of Each Month

1.  Eternal Father, I offer to Your honour and glory, for my own salvation and that of the whole world, the mystery of the birth of our Divine Saviour. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

2.  Eternal Father, I offer to Your honour and glory, and for my eternal salvation and that of the whole world, the sufferings of the Most Holy Virgin and of St. Joseph in that long and weary journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem.  I offer You the sorrows of their hearts when they found no place to shelter themselves when the Saviour of the world was born.  Glory be to the Father...

3.  Eternal Father, I offer to Your honour and glory, and for my eternal salvation and that of the whole world, the sufferings of Jesus in the stable where He was born, the cold He suffered, the swaddling clothes which bound Him, the tears He shed, and His tender infant cries.  Glory be to the Father...

4.  Eternal Father, I offer to Your honour and glory, and for my eternal salvation and that of the whole world, the pain which the Holy Child Jesus felt in His tender body when He submitted to circumcision.  I offer You that Precious Blood which then for the first time He shed for the salvation of the whole human race.  Glory be to the Father...

5.  Eternal Father, I offer to Your honour and glory, and for my eternal salvation and that of the whole world, the humility, mortification, patience, charity, all the virtues of the Child Jesus; and I thank You, and I love You, and I bless You without end for the ineffable mystery of the incarnation of the Divine Word.  Glory be to the Father...

     V.  The Word was made flesh.
     R.  And dwelt among us.

Let Us Pray

O God, Whose only-begotten Son was made manifest to us in the substance of our flesh, grant, we imploreYou, that through Him, Whom we acknowledge to be like ourselves, our souls may be inwardly renewed.  Who lives and reigns with You forever and ever. Amen.

Powerful Novena in Urgent Need

(In case of great urgency, a novena of hours may be made instead of days.  The prayers should be repeated at the same time every hour for nine hours.)

O Jesus, Who has said, "Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you,"  through the intercession of Mary, Your most Holy Mother, I knock, I seek, I ask that my prayer be granted.

(Mention your request)

O Jesus, Who has said, "All that you ask of the Father in My Name He will grant you,"  through the intercession of Mary, Your Most Holy Mother, I humbly and urgently ask Your Father in Your Name that my prayer be granted.

(Mention your request)

O Jesus, Who has said, "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My word shall not pass,"  through the intercession of Mary, Your Most Holy Mother, I feel confident that my prayer will be granted.

(Mention your request)

Rosary Novena Prayer

Holy Virgin Mary, Mother of God and our Mother, accept this Holy Rosary which I offer You to show my love for You and my firm confidence in Your powerful intercession.  I offer it as an act of faith in the mysteries of the Incarnation and Redemption, as an act of thanksgiving to God for all His love for me and all mankind, as an act of atonement for the sins of the world especially my own, as an act of petition to God through Your intercession for all the needs of God's people on earth, but especially for this earnest request.
                                                                              (Mention your request.)

I beg You, dear Mother of God, present my petition to Jesus, Your Son.  I know that You want me to seek God's will in my request.  If what I ask for should not be God's will, pray that I may receive that which will be of greater benefit for my soul I put all my conficence in You.
