There are many different techniques to breed your guppies.
The three most popular are called selective breeding, inbreeding, and out crossing. I will tell
you how I breed my guppies and what you should have. I use the selective breeding method. To start off
you should have at least a ten gallon tank (preferably nine of them), some kind of air pump, guppy food,
some type of sponge filter, heater, thermometer(optional), and guppies. You
should try to obtain a true breeding stock (purebred strain) of guppies.
Generally you should buy one male and two female(Trio).
Before you buy your trio,
you should have had your tank filled with water, your air pump and thus sponge filter running for at least twenty-four hours. Naturally, you could buy some water conditioners and live bacteria to speed up the process. Once you have bought your
trio, put the object that holds your guppies into the water.(Usually a plastic bag or
container) Let it sit in the tank for about a half an hour. When 15 minutes has passed, place some of the tank water into the container in which your guppies are held. This is to get your guppies use to the water quality of the tank. You may want to put in some stress coat at this time as well. About 15 minutes later slowly
let your guppies into the tank. Do not feed them right away. In about 2 hours
you may feed them a small amount of
Within a month you should
be getting baby guppies. This is assuming that your breeding stock is not sterile. Upon seeing the baby guppies
you should take them out immediately and put them in a separate tank. You may feed
them some newly hatched baby brine shrimp. They may not eat right away but they will eat
in time. You should keep them on this diet for about a month. Then introduce them to some flake food. After about a month feed your
baby guppies baby brine shrimp at least once a day. I also recommend that you buy
a variety of flake foods. If you have a heater, then put it in the same tank as the baby guppies and set the temperature at
about 78 degrees fahrenheit. In about a month or two you should separate your baby guppies
into two tanks. One for males and one for females.
In order to tell if your
baby guppies are male or female you will need to look at them in the light against a black background.
Females have a blackish dot (gravid spot) near their vented area or anal fin (where they go to the bathroom). Males do not. You will have to look at them very carefully. When in doubt, make the guppy a male.
Once you have
separated your guppies, keep them on the diet I have explained above. When they are about 2 months old, place all the females into a differnt tank as well as the males. This is to make sure that these guppies will not eat or nibble on the new batch of guppies. You would want to place your baby guppies in a new tank each month because every month you should be expecting baby guppies from the original trio. When they are about
three months old, they should be pretty large. They are probably around an inch length. Within a few generation
you should select your best trio and breed them. If you are not satisfied with the
batch of guppies you have, than just wait until another batch comes. You should
get baby guppies every 28 days. Give or take a few days depending on the strain of
guppies you breed and health conditions. Then you should repeat the steps I told you.
