One of the most important thing to maintain healthy guppies are water changes. Water changes are essential for your guppy's health. I change my guppy's water every week. I also recommend that you change your guppy's water weekly also. For adult guppies you should change about 25% through 50% of their water and replace it with tap water. For baby guppies you change anywhere from 50 through 75% of their water and replace it with tap water. When you replace the water, the water temperature should be about the same temperature as the water your guppies are in. You should also check the PH, Ammonia level, and if there is any chlorine or chloramine, in your tap water. If there is than I would recommend that you do not use tap water and use spring water instead. Your PH level should be around 7.0 through 7.2. If it is above or below these readings than your guppies may not be as healthy as you may want them to be. You can buy PH increaser or decreaser at your local pet shop. You do not want any ammonia, chlorine, or chloramine in your water. If you have traces of these chemicals in your water than I would recommend that you change your water immediately. Your local pet shop may have some products that will get rid of these chemicals in your water. When you replace the water that you have changed I would recommend that you put in some non iodized salt or sea salt along with the water you have replaced. I would use the measuring of 1 tablespoon of salt per 5 gallons of water or 1 teaspoon of salt per a gallon of water. The salt will help kill off any diseases in your water. It also helps heal any problems with your guppies. It is not a miracle drug so do not expect it will prevent any diseases. Salt does not evaporate, so if your water evaporates it will have the same amount of salt you put in. The only way you get rid of the salt in the water is when you change the water. Once you have changed the water and replaced it with more water I would recommend that you put in the same amount of salt you took out.
